Health Insurance

Health care in the United States is very expensive. A simple visit to a doctor can cost hundreds of dollars and staying in the hospital for a couple of days may cost a fortune. Therefore, health insurance is required at IPFW for ALL international students. A health insurance plan offered by IPFW is available to ALL international students, therefore, a foreign health fee will be added to your bill each semester. Your insurance card will be available for you to pick up from the International Student Services Department two weeks after it has been ordered.

Health insurance in the summer

If you usually use the IPFW health insurance during the academic year, but intend to be in your home country between June 15 and August 15, you may request that the summer health insurance coverage be waived. You must bring your plane ticket to International Student Services showing your departure before June 15 and arrival after August 15. Once we have reviewed your travel plans and have determined that you are eligible for a waiver, we will request a refund of your health insurance premium for the summer. The deadline for the submission of summer-only waiver is June 1.

You may also have your summer health insurance waived if you are graduating in May. Simply have your academic advisor or department chair contact us via email confirming that you will be graduating.

Waiving Health Insurance

How to waive health insurance fees

  1. If your existing insurance is not from within the United States, please submit a completed “Clarification of Insurance Policy Benefits” form if one is not already on file in International Student Services. In order to have the form completed properly, you should send the “Clarification of Insurance Policy Benefits” form to your insurance company and have them complete and send it to the information provided on the contact page. The form must be submitted before the end of the second week of the semester.
  2. After completing step 1, make an appointment to meet with a member of the ISS staff. You must bring a copy of your insurance card (with coverage dates) to the appointment. Based on the documents provided by you and your insurance company, it should be possible to determine if your health insurance fee can be waived. If not, additional documentation may be requested at the appointment.
  3. One week after the waiver has been approved (if applicable) by ISS, check your myIPFW account to make sure the insurance fees have been waived.
