Admissions
Requirements
IPFW considers many factors when reviewing applications for admission from international applicants including:
Academic Achievement
Your secondary and/or higher education records/achievements play a significant role in our admission decision making process. The better your secondary and/or higher education school records are, the better the chance that you will secure admission with IPFW. In order to secure admission at IPFW, you need to submit original documents, certified or attested copies showing good academic achievement in high school, college, or university. Most common credentials include transcripts/mark sheets (documents issued by high schools, colleges, or universities listing the courses taken with grades) or nationally accredited examinations [such as GCSE and "O" and "A" levels, Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) results, etc.]. Transcripts submitted for admission become the property of IPFW and cannot be returned to you or sent to another college or university. Photocopied or scanned copies are not acceptable as official documents.
English Proficiency
All international students whose native language is not English must submit proof of English proficiency. The most common way of demonstrating English proficiency is through standardized exams, such as:
- TOEFL (school code 1336)
- IELTS*
- SAT or ACT
- STEP/EIKEN results
- Ordinary-level examination results
- West African Education Council (WAEC) examination results
- Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) examination results
- Caribbean Advanced Proficiency (CAPE) examination results
- Certificate of completion of the ELS Language Center program with a level of 112
- Michigan Test results
* IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations)
Admission to the Mastodon Advising Center (ESL admission):
- TOEFL Paper: 500-549
- TOEFL Internet: 61-78
- IELTS Academic: 5.5
- STEP/EIKEN: Grade 2
- SAT: 400-449 on Critical Reading
Admission to an Academic Department:
- TOEFL Paper: 550+
- TOEFL Internet: 79+
- IELTS Academic: 6.5+
- STEP/EIKEN: Grade Pre-1
- SAT: 450+ on Critical Reading
SAT/ACT:
Although you are not required to take the ACT or SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) as an international student, taking one of these exams will enhance your chances of securing admission and scholarships.
Proof of Financial Support
- As per the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), you must provide official documents to prove you have enough money to pay for your education and living expenses. IPFW provides a limited number of Chancellor's Merit Awards, which help lower the cost of attendance for international students, especially those with outstanding academic records and achievements. Please note that early applicants get priority consideration.
- We require a current bank statement (dated within the past 6 months) on bank letterhead, with the name of the account holder and currency clearly indicated in English. An Affidavit of Support cannot be used in place of a bank statement.
- If the family name (surname) of the account holder on the financial statement is different from your own, you will need to provide a letter written in English from that individual stating his or her relationship to you and intention to financially support your education.
Transfer International Students
Any international applicant who has been enrolled in a higher education institution (within or outside the U.S.) and has earned university credits (successfully completed courses or subjects) should apply for admission as a transfer international student. To qualify for admission to IPFW as a transfer international student, you must achieve a minimum 2.00 on a 4.0 GPA scale before transferring to IPFW.
In order to be awarded transfer credit for courses you successfully completed after secondary school, you must submit official transcripts with certified English translations and exam results with your application. To ensure your evaluation is most accurate, we require that you submit short course descriptions for all courses you completed.
