Incomplete Policies
ILCS faculty are reminded of the IPFW Academic Regulations statement on the granting of Incomplete (I) grades:
A grade of I may be granted to students:
-
who are unable to complete specific course requirements for clearly unavoidable, non-academic reasons (such as extended illness or relocation)
- whose work has been of passing quality up to that time. A grade of I will not be considered as an alternative to an anticipated low grade in a course
(IPFW 1996-98 Bulletin, p. 108)
Additionally, this department generally does not give I grades in elementary and intermediate (100- and 200-level) language courses. Exceptions for cases involving maternity, illness, or other situations that are beyond the student's control may be considered individually. In general, exceptions should be made only when:
-
only a small portion of the required work remains to be completed; and
-
the student has a grade of C or higher in the work completed.
A faculty member who is in doubt as to whether a student's request for an incomplete should be granted should consult with the department chair or the Faculty and Student Affairs Committee.
