Developing a Bibliography

You should begin any research project by developing a bibliography of books and periodical articles dealing with your topic. The following databases are a good place to start.

Books: IUCAT, ACPL, Other Libraries

Periodicals

  • Pre-Computer age
  • Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature
  • Nineteenth Century Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature
  • Poole's Index
  • Periodical Source Index (PerSI)

Databases and Indexes Social/Behavioral Science & Humanities

  • America: History and Life
  • Academic Search Elite
  • Social Sciences Index
    JStor

Search strategy: For most topics you will want to consult the hard cover (Readers' Guide, PerSI) as well as the electronic databases to develop your bibliography. However, if you are doing a "current events" paper, you will only have to consult the electronic resources.
