Western Civilization to 1500 Fall 2007 Essay Unlike the
In an essay the student should first describe briefly the classic Hellenic polis. Then a discussion should follow about the origins of the Hellenistic cities and their ties to the needs of the monarchies. Next the essay might describe the new cities and their relations to the political, cultural, artistic and economic life of the Hellenistic Age, and how these cities differed from the earlier Greek city. Finally, the historical analysis might offer an explanation of why the Hellenistic cities did not prompt civic loyalty in the way the earlier cities had done, and, if possible, speculate about modern urban conditions as a mirror of Hellenistic social life.
An essay is an extended discussion, written in your own words. Do not copy words or phrases from your textbook, or from any other book. Copying is plagiarism and will result in a failing grade on the assignment. The essay should be about 600-750 words, that is, two or three double-spaced typed pages. The essay should be passed through both a spell-checking program and also a grammar-checking program on the word processor before it is turned in. The university network offers several different word processing systems, which contain both spelling and grammar checking-programs. The wise approach to doing this essay would be to use the university computer network for the essay. Essays without spelling and grammar checking can quickly be returned to the author for corrections, if necessary. But don’t make that necessary.
The essay is due in class on 16 October at class time. A late paper loses one full grade up to 23 October. After that date, the essay loses two full letter grades up to 30 October. After that date, the essay grade becomes an F. In addition, the final course grade will be lowered one full letter grade with the F essay grade computed into the average. See the information on the essay in the syllabus.
