I. DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this course is to help students to better grasp Islam, as one of the World monotheistic foreign religions in Africa. It will foster students to the wealthy and diverse African and Islamic societies, experiences and traditions as they analyze the impact of Islam on African cultures and thus the challenges faced by Islam through the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial periods. The class will consist of two weekly meetings (Mondays and Wednesdays) for presentations, lectures, film shows and discussions.

Grading and Evaluation Criteria of all Exams
A= 90-100%
B= 80-89%
C= 70-79%
D= 60-69%
E= Below 59%
IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: The following criteria will determine your final grade:
1) A One single spaced page reflection (15%): Each student will have to do a reflection once a week on the daily readings except the first week and last week of the semester.
2) A Four-page Chapter Review (15 %): At the beginning of the semester
each student will be a signed a chapter from one of the required
readings to read and review it. Each student will be assigned a
day for a 20 minute oral presentation based on the chapter
review done on that day. You are expected to present a one single
spaced typed copy of your review to the instructor and to other
class members on your presentation day before your presentation (Review
due on the day of presentation)
3) Mid-Semester Exam 25% (Wednesday Oct. 24th)
4) A One 8-10 page Research Paper due on Wednesday, November 14th (15%). See classroom policies and ethics section below
5) In-class end of semester exam on Wednesday, December, 12th (30%).
V. CLASSROOM POLICIES AND ETHICS
Final Paper: Your final paper should be written according to the required standard style for annotations such as foot notes, bibliography, page title, quotations, and grammar, flow of thought and argument, and spelling. You can also contact the writing center for guidance if need be. Remember to read carefully your final paper for any correction before submitting it. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact the professor or the writing center.
