Ruby Cain, MAOM

Photo of Ruby CainRuby Cain is the NEI-AHEC Director. She brings to the organization an extensive and comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to collaborative problem solving and resolution of business, education, community, and health issues.

Higher education work experience includes curriculum development, instruction, distance education, program administration in the areas of Computer Applications, Business Information Systems, Systems Analysis, Project Management, Professional Development, and Public Program Planning. Business enterprise experience includes President/CEO, Creative Training Excellence, Inc. (organizational management consulting); small business program planning, counseling, and education; strategic planning; program development/management; fund development/administration; TQM process improvement/problem solving; marketing; RFP development/selection; and information technology (systems analysis/design, database development, and desktop applications utilization).

Academic pursuits have also included interdisciplinary strategies. Education includes B.A. degree in Sociology (special emphasis in mathematics, statistics, and information technology) at Wayne State University; M. A. degree in Organizational Management (thesis: "The Effectiveness of Re-Tooling as It Relates to the Employee's Perception toward the Application of the New Skills.") at University of Phoenix; and currently pursuing Ed.D. degree in Adult and Community Education (dissertation research: “Cultural Proficiency of Healthcare Professionals”) at Ball State University.

Community service involvement is representative of Ruby’s varied interests and life mission: Past President and Junior Investigator of Fort Wayne African American Cancer Alliance (FWAACA), Inc. (affiliate of National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer, program of National Cancer Institute and co-sponsored by HealthVisions Midwest); Founding Member, Health Disparity Coalition; President of Pi Lambda Theta  (International Educational Honor Society) Fort Wayne Area Chapter and 3rd Vice President, PLT Great Lakes Region II; Publicity Chair, The Links, Incorporated, Fort Wayne Chapter; Diversity Chair, American Association of University Women; and board member of YWCA. 2005 accomplishments include two continuing medical education events, in collaboration with community education and awareness: FWAACA’s “Bridges to a Healthier Community: Cancer Awareness and Disparities” (premier sponsor: Parkview Regional Cancer Center), featuring David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D. (16th United States Surgeon General and President Morehouse School of Medicine) and  “The Status of Early Cancer Detection in Underserved Communities” with keynote speaker, Javette C. Orgain, M.D,, M.P.H. and panel of local healthcare professionals (presented by FWAACA, Lutheran Hospital’s Women’s Cancer Center, Fort Wayne Medical Education Program, and Tower Bank). Ruby planned, coordinated, and administered 2005 Smokefree Bowlathon (sponsored by Smokefree Allen County, FWAACA, Stop the Madness, and Whitelies.tv) that included free bowling, cancer awareness education and health screenings. Other activities include cultural awareness education and activities for adults and youth, cultural diversity training on tobacco use and cessation strategies for priority populations (African American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/ Transgender (GLBT), Hispanic/Latino Low Socioeconomic, and Native American/Alaska Natives) for Smokefree Allen County Tobacco Cessation Committee and the medical community. Ruby coauthored Education Chapter of State of Black Fort Wayne 2003 (A Statistical Profile of the African American Community), publication of the Urban League, that is used as a companion text in IPFW Education and Sociology classes.

Local community service awards include: 2006 American Association of University Women’s Eleanor Roosevelt Award and TV21 Indiana NewsCenter Women in Leadership Award, 2005 Great Men & Women of Diversity, 2004 Tower Bank – Towering Force; 2004 INK Newspaper One of 7 to Watch and One of 50 Most Influential African Americans in Northeast Indiana; 2003 & 2004 Faith in Action Volunteer Recognition; 2003 & 2004 Pi Lambda Theta (Educational Honor Society) Chapter of Honor; 2003 United Way Outstanding Service; 1997 – 2000 Urban League Outstanding Service.
