2009 Tapestry Scholarship Recipients
Amanda Operschall
Operschall is a sophomore at IPFW working toward a Bachelor of Nursing degree. She was a member of the National Honor Society at Indiana University, is CPR certified, participated in the National Youth Leadership Nursing Forum in Boston, Massachusetts, and has completed training in HIPPA regulations.
While in high school, Operschall was an active Key Club member, volunteered
at a physicians office and spent many hours in the pediatric unit where
she played with the ill patients, consoled the children’s families
and also learned about the medical environment. After the death
of her father in March 2008, her goal of becoming a nurse practitioner
became clear. “Loosing a loved one is such a horrible experience
and I want to do everything in my power to prevent anyone from having
to go through what my sister, mother and I have had to deal with this
past year.
“I know this is my calling because I relate well with children and there
is nothing I would not do to ease their pain,” said Operschall. “ I
want to be the one who has the opportunity to sit with the patient if they
are feeling scared, to give some hope for the ill, and to make a difference
in their life by not only helping them medically, but emotionally as well.” The
scholarship, she notes, will be “greatly appreciated in order to mold
an IPFW nursing student who is dedicated and determined to succeed despite
her tragedies.”
Denise Thieme
Thieme returned to school in 2007 to study Nursing, while being a single mother of four. She is a member of the Omicron Psi Honor Society, the Foundation of the National Student Nurse’s Association and the IPFW Student Nurses Association. She volunteers for Parkview Hospice and serves breakfast weekly with her children at the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission.
She has embraced opportunities to expand her education beyond the classroom
by participating in on-campus legislative lunches, bus trips to the State
House, attending To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health Care System,
and Diabesity: the Obesity Diabetes Epidemic.
“Upon completion of my baccalaureate degree I plan to work as an advocate
for underserved and geriatric populations and research socioeconomic health
disparities,” said Thieme. “Learning to lobby government
leaders for improved and equal healthcare and working with the elderly in a
community health setting are avenues I would like to pursue. Following
my graduation from the baccalaureate nursing program, I plan to continue my
education and complete my master’s degree so I can educate future nurses.”
The scholarship will allow Thieme to continue her education, graduate within her goal of three years, and enter the work force again. “Ultimately, I hope to take the knowledge I acquire from my experiences at IPFW and make a difference in the lives of the poor, the elderly, and future nursing students.”
IPFW Father-Daughter Duo Share More than Just the Family Name
Hair color, height, even a smile—these are traits we often have in common with our dads. But speaking at ceremonies and sharing a college campus aren’t average commonalities for most father-daughter pairs. Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) graduate Kevin Taylor and freshman Kate Taylor aren’t your average pair though. The two Taylors can happily boast that they share these characteristics as well as their praises of IPFW.
Kevin was chosen by his classmates to represent the December nursing class by giving the student response at the Nursing Pinning Ceremony, a recognition ceremony for nursing students. He shared his story of losing his vice president position with a large financial firm at the age of 49 and deciding to pursue a new career of nursing. “There is a huge shortage of nurses and hospitals are constantly scrambling for help,” he said. “I chose IPFW because it had a very well-respected nursing program and I could finish in a couple of years.”
In his speech, he also shared that just this past spring his daughter, Kate, spoke at her commencement ceremony. The then Homestead High School senior was class president for four years and spoke about remembering the good times, friends, and family along one’s journey in life.
In addition to sharing public speaking abilities and recognition for their hard work, the two also shared the IPFW campus this fall. Although Kate was accepted by Purdue University, Kevin suggested she study at IPFW for her freshman year so she could work while she was deciding on a major. Her IPFW credits will transfer when she enrolls at Purdue next fall as a broadcast journalism major. "IPFW has great teachers and I've enjoyed the courses I have taken here,” said Kate. “A lot of people don't realize it is a Division I school and not just a community college."
Kevin’s plans for the future include working in the local hospital setting for several years to practice the skills he learned in school. He hopes to earn a master’s degree in the next several years to give him even more opportunities, especially in the teaching field.
“Four years ago, I thought IPFW was a nice local community college that can be found in every good-sized city. The last several years have changed my mind completely about the institution! It’s a full-fledged university where you can get not only a bachelor's degree, but even a master's degree! With attendance exceeding 12,000 students, the campus also has the feel of many larger schools and the cost to attend is about half of what you would pay at the larger universities in the state. In this day of outrageously high costs of higher education, it is a blessing to have a school of this caliber in our own backyard!”
