Department Profile
The Department of Geosciences at Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne currently has three professors and one assistant professor of geology, including the internationally recognized paleontologist Dr. James O. Farlow. Also, Dr. Jack Sunderman and Dr. Dipak Chowdhury hold emeritus positions and continue to teach and conduct research.
Students pursuing geology degrees will find diverse and challenging research programs which encourage active participation. Most of the research is in the field and many trips are organized by the faculty each year. These field trips give students the opportunity to exercise their classroom learning on how to identify geologic formations, fossils, and minerals.
Students are given in-depth instruction on quantitative and qualitative analysis on geologic samples, using a variety of methods including polarizing microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), chemical analysis, and X-ray diffraction.
IPFW has had undergraduate degrees in Geology since 1964 and has had over 120 graduates since 1969.
