First Year Experience

Welcome to IPFW! We want you to succeed from the start, and that's why we've created the First Year Experience (FYE). FYE makes it easier for you to find your way around, make friends and succeed academically. You will connect with other students, faculty, and staff through exceptional academic programs and an exciting campus life. A powerful way to experience FYE is through Learning Communities. Learning Communities consist of groups of students in linked or paired courses. Communities foster a deeper understanding, integrate different classes with each other, and contain a social element that links classroom experiences with fun and rewarding activities both on and off campus. Each connection you make through FYE supports your success because FYE is about students and for students.

FYE Philosophy

FYE connects you with your faculty and fellow students through exceptional academic programming designed to speed your entrance into IPFW's community of learning. A powerful way to begin your journey to academic success is through the FYE Learning Community. These paired or linked courses bring together faculty from two or more areas who model for their students how the disciplines can fit together. FYE Learning Communities foster a deeper understanding of the IPFW Baccalaureate Framework, encourage thinking outside the box, and foster connections beyond the classroom. Each connection is a milestone that can help make your achievement possible.

Mission Statement

The First Year Experience (FYE) exists to serve the greater mission of IPFW by bringing diverse groups of first-year students with similar interests together to study, learn, live, and build community through initiatives executed by faculty and staff committed to supporting the educational, developmental, and social needs of first-year students. Moreover, FYE advocates for first-year students within IPFW's larger university community by actively listening to the views of first-year students and representing their interest in campus planning, thereby enhancing these students' retention and success.
