
Federal Grants
There are many grants from the Federal Government that student may apply for through FAFSA. Grants are need-based aid, so not all students are eligible. If you are eligible for a grant, it will show online when we award you.
There are different types of grants with different criteria. Here is a list of the federal grants:
Pell Grant
- The Pell grant is based on financial need
- A student’s Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) from their FAFSA must be a figure of 4100 or less to be eligible to receive the Pell grant
- The Pell grant varies depending on what your EFC is and how many classes you are taking
- Your Pell grant is locked in at however many credit hours you are enrolled in at the end of the first week of classes
- Any pell grant funds that are not used in either fall or spring term will be available for you to use in the summer
Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
- SEOG is only awarded to undergraduate students.
- You must have exceptional financial need and be eligible for Pell grant
- Awards are only made to students who meet priority filing deadlines.
- We receive limited funding, so not all eligible students will receive it.
Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
- You must be a U.S. Citizen
- You must be a Pell Grant recipient
- You must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours)
- You may be in any major
- You may only receive this grant as a 1st or 2nd year student
- The terms “first year” and “second year” are determined by the school—IPFW considers a first year student as a student who has earned 29 credit hours or less. A second year student is a student who has earned 30 credit hours or more.
- This grant is restricted to one award per class level (e.g. one award given when student is a freshman, one award given when student is a sophomore)
- This grant is available at two or four year institutions
- You must earn and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA
- 1st year students may receive up to $750 ($375 per semester)
- 2nd year students may receive up to $1,300 ($650 per semester)
- You must have completed a rigorous high school program of study
Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant
- You must be a U.S. Citizen
- You must be a Pell Grant recipient
- You must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours)
- You must be majoring in Engineering, science (physical, life or computer), technology, math, or designated foreign languages
- This grant is only available at four year institutions
- You may only receive this grant as a 3rd or 4th year student
- The terms “third year” and “fourth year” are determined by the school—IPFW considers a third year student as a student who has completed 60 to 89 credit hours. A fourth year student is a student who has completed 90 credit hours or more.
- This grant is restricted to one award per class level
- You must maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in coursework required for major
- You may receive up to $4,000 ($2,000 per semester) for each 3rd & 4th academic years of study
