Applications (FAFSA)

You can apply to all of the programs we offer by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA collects data about you, your family, and your financial circumstances, and sends an analysis of that data to us.

Federal Aid awards require that a student fits the following criteria:

  • Student must be admitted as a degree-seeking undergraduate student.
  • Student must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen,
  • Student must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards as defined by the IPFW Financial Aid office
  • Student does not owe a refund on a federal student grant or be in default on a federal student loan, and
  • Student is not enrolled in a program leading to a second associate or baccalaureate degree in the same area as their first associate or baccalaureate degree.

Please understand that some funding source awards may have additional criteria but all have these minimum requirements.

Completing the FAFSA

You and your parents will need a federal PIN number to sign the FAFSA online. You can request a PIN at the Federal PIN Web site. If you have it e-mailed, you will receive it immediately. If you have it mailed, you will get it in about a week. Please put your PIN registration in a safe place once you keep it as it represents access to your personal and financial information. You will use the same PIN to access your application and to renew your aid application each year.

Documents required to fill out the FAFSA are federal tax returns, W2 forms and bank statements. As you answer the FAFSA questions, you may see references to specific lines on specific tax returns and so having them with you will make this a much easier process.

You may want to complete the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet before going online to complete your FAFSA.

When all FAFSA questions are completed, please make sure both you and, if required, your parents sign the FAFSA. Forgetting to sign can be corrected, but it will cause delays and your aid may be reduced as a result of having a late application.

After you submit the FAFSA electronically, you will receive an e-mail notifying you that you can review your Student Aid Report online. This is a summary of your application and you should review it to make sure your answers are correct. You can make changes to your application online using your federal PIN number. If you have entered our school code (001828), we will receive the application file electronically and begin the process of awarding your financial aid.

Dependency Criteria

One of the criteria used to determine the amount of financial aid that you will be awarded is whether you are a dependent or independent student. When you fill out the FAFSA, you are asked a series of questions that determine your dependency status. This information can also be found on a worksheet at the FAFSA website.
