About the materials for English W131
The materials for English W131 listed below were assembled by Sarah Sandman and Mark Sidey in the spring of 2006. All the materials below were created in Microsoft Word. Each file should open in a separate window. Instructors at IPFW are welcome to use and modify the materials as needed. The materials include syllabi, calendars, and assignments.
Outcomes for W131
All instructors must include four sets of outcomes in their syllabi for English W131. Feel free to cut and paste from the outcomes sheet.
Two sets of syllabi and rationales
Each syllabus deals with issues such as preparation, submission directions, and plagiarisim in unique ways. It's worth your time to look at both.
- One syllabus was written by Mark Sidey, with this sequence of assignments: profile, annotated bibliography, researched paper, researched report, and evaluation (see the "assignment handouts" section). Sidey has also included a rationale for his sequence of assignments.
- The other was written by Sarah Sandman, with this sequence of assignments: literacy memoir, commentary, textual analysis, multigenre research paper. Sandman has also included a rationale for her sequence of assignments.
Two calendars
Both calendars are built around the use of The Norton Field Guide to Writing.
- One calendar is geared toward Mark Sidey's syllabus
- The other is geared toward Sarah Sandman's syllabus
Assignment handouts
The list below is arranged in the most likely order in which projects may be assigned. That is, most instructors assign a literacy narrative or profile before they assign a research paper. Note: Sandman and Sidey handle research reports in very different ways. You might want to compare them.
- The Literacy Narrative (Sandman)
- The Profile (Sidey)
- The Commentary Essay (Sandman)
- The Annotated Biliography (Sidey)
- The Research Report (Sidey). The Research Report is a kind of Progress Report that students write at some point during the Research Paper project.
- The Research Paper (Sidey).
- The Multi-Genre Research Project (Sandman)
- The Evaluation (Sidey)
