English as a New Language
ENGLISH AS A NEW LANGUAGE LICENSE
(Undergraduate)
The Department of English and Linguistics at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), in conjunction with the IPFW School of Education (SOE), offers an add-on license in English as a New Language (ENL) to candidates who are licensed or who are obtaining licenses for specific content area(s) and specific grade levels. Our ENL program provides solid professional education and preparation for undergraduates and graduate students who wish to earn a license in teaching English as a New Language in P-12 school settings.
Our program features a structured and balanced curriculum, providing education graduates with solid theoretical foundation for second language teaching and learning as well as sound pedagogical understanding, approaches, skills, and techniques. The curriculum prepares students as credentialed, knowledgeable professionals with expertise in teaching and working with English language learners.
Program Requirements
The ENL license will require satisfactory completion of eighteen credit hours of course work in the areas of ENL pedagogy and materials preparation, second language acquisition theories, sociolinguistics and cultural issues, English grammar, and practical classroom experiences.

Grammar Credits: 3
SPAN S428 may, in conjunction with other linguistics courses, meet the grammar requirement.
Methods Credits: 6

Practicum Credits: 3
Admission requirements
All students will be required to meet regular IPFW admission standards as presented in the IPFW Bulletin. In addition, students must meet the School of Education’s requirements for admission to the teacher education program.
Criteria:
- Successful passage of PPST
- A minimum GPA of 2.5
- Recommended completion of LING L103
