Student Opportunities
Contests
The Department of English & Linguistics sponsors three separate contests for IPFW students.
Sylvia E. Bowman Annual Writing Prize
The Sylvia E. Bowman Annual Writing Prize is given annually to one registered IPFW student, graduate or undergraduate, who submits the best essay about literature or language, or about the teaching of literature or language. The $100 prize is awarded at the annual Arts & Sciences Honors Banquet in April.
The essay should follow the MLA Style Manual. Submit your essay to the English & Linguistics Department in Classroom-Medical Building, room 145 without your name on it. Instead, put your name, address, and phone number in an attached, sealed envelope.
The deadline for submissions is February 23. The winner will be notified by April 8.
Steven Hollander Scholarship
The Steven Hollander Scholarship is given annually to one reigstered IPFW student, with junior standing or higher, who submits the best portfolio of writings in business, technical, and professional writing. The $375 award, which is restricted to payment of tuition and fees, is awarded at the annual Arts & Sciences Honors Banquet in April. Application Forms and Submission Instructions [PDF]
Psi Iota Xi Award for Writing
The Psi Iota Xi Award for Writing is given annually to one registered IPFW undergraduate who submits the best short story. The $3000 award, generously contributed by the Pi chapter of Psi Iota Xi, is awarded at the annual Arts & Sciences Honors Banquet in April. Qualified entries will also be considered for publication in Confluence.
Entrants must be registered as undergraduates at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne and have a 3.0 grade-point average, a 3.0 average in college English work, and not have earned an advanced degree.
Completed entries must be received by the Department of English & Linguistics before 5 p.m. on March 5. A completed entry includes two parts:
- One or two unpublished short stories, each of which must be between 1500 and 3500 words. Stories must be submitted in two forms: on a 3 1/2" disk formatted in Microsoft Word or Word Perfect, and typed or machine printed on one side of 8 1/2" by 11" paper. Each manuscript must be titled and the disk must be labeled. The author's name must not appear on the manuscript or the disk.
- A blank, sealed envelope, stapled to the first page of each manuscript, containing the author's name, address, telephone number, and title of the manuscript.
Entries lacking either part will not be considered.
Entries may be picked up at the Department of English & Linguistics after April 20. Entries remaining after May 1 will be discarded.
Selected members of the English faculty and Psi Iota Xi will consider the creativity and quality of form and content of the manuscript(s). In the event of a tie, the award may be divided. The winner will be announced by April 20.
Inquiries should be directed to Michael Kaufmann or Richard Ramsey.
