Best Practices--Assignments

The following links offer a variety of assignments to peruse. While the assignments are grouped according to the course for which they were developed, each assignment could be easily modified to suit a higher- or lower-level composition course.

In addition to having a large variety of assignments, many instructors structure their assignments differently--though all establish clear grading criteria. Be sure to examine assignments from seveal different contributors.

Evaluation Assignment--evaluating an article as a precursor to a larger argumentative assignment
Evaluation Assignment--evaluating a service (resturant, car wash, salon, etc.) exclusive to Fort Wayne
Informative Assignment--informing about a skill or hobby the student may have
Observation Assignment--observing and expressing that observation--includes peer response and plan sheets
Profile Assignment--profiling a person who has impacted the student's life
Research Assignment--researching any topic of interest--includes peer response and plan sheets
Research Assignment--persuading or informing regarding an area of popular culture

Literacy Narrative--expressing a student's literacy history

Summary Exercise Version 2--two summary response exercises
Writing Center Evaluation --describing and evaluating a Writing Center visit

Advertisement Evaluation--evaluating the methods and merits of print advertising
Analytical Research Assignment--investigates and analyzes how someone or something is an icon, symbol, or role model to a specific culture or subculture
Commentary Essay--analyzing and commenting on a contemporary issue
Evaluation Assignment--evaluating an Internet article as a precursor to a larger reserach assignment--used mostly in summer sessions
Gender Influence Assignment--researching a toy, figure, or character from popular culture that influences or reflects the student's childhood view of gender
Fairy Tale Assignment--showing a secondary character from a children's story from a different perspective--giving him/her history or detailing his/her point of view from a famous scene of the story
Informative Assignment--researching and informing about a faith/religion/myth beyond the student's own beliefs
Literacy Autobiography--expressing a student's literacy history
Metaphor Assignment--analyzing how a game of the student's choice reflects or represents life
Observation Assignment--observing and expressing that observation--includes peer response and plan sheets
Proposal Assignment--proposing a larger research project
Research Assignment--researching any topic of interest--includes peer response and plan sheets
Writing Projects Proposal Assignment--proposing topics for all later research projects

Business Email--responding to a prospective IPFW student's questions about the student's major
Collaborative Assignment--researching a topic from this list in collaborative groups
Direct Request and Reply--requesting anything and positively responding to the request
Indirect Letter--offering bad news professionally
Individual Report--researching a topic from this list individually
Interview Follow Up Letter--thanking a potential employer for an interview
Letter of Application--selling themselves in a cover letter
Memo--informing about a student's academic progress and future
Persuasive Sales Letter--persuading a hostile or non-responsive audience

Portfolio Assignment -- An assignment for building an evaluative portfolio to be submitted near the end of the course.
