Department of English & Linguistics
Overview
Programs in English & Linguistics are designed for students who want a sound liberal arts education. The programs offer suitable preparation for graduate or professional school as well as careers in teaching and writing (both creative and professional). Alumni have gone on to careers in teaching at universities or in the schools, in marketing, orthopedics, civic organizations, and industry.
The major in English increases your ability to understand and use language effectively, powerful skills in an age dominated by information technologies. A degree in English prepares you for this age because:
- Literary study provides a basis for understanding various forms of cultural expression.
- Linguistics teaches the structure and function of languages from a global perspective.
- Folklore introduces the student to voices otherwise neglected by the dominant culture.
