Student Teaching

Overview

You are about to enter one of the most important phases of your professional education. During your field experiences and student teaching you will have the opportunity to translate educational philosophy, psychology, and methodology into practice, and to integrate the knowledge you have gained with your understanding of your people.

Very soon you will have the opportunity to function both as a learner and as a teacher. It is our hope that you will become totally integrated with the educational program of your cooperating school. You will interact with students, teachers, administrators, and support personnel and attempt to refine those skills which permit you to function effectively in the environment of the school.

You will be afforded the privilege of assuming the responsibility for teaching and nonteaching duties. During this time, you will discover some of your strengths and use these to great advantage. You will also discover some of your weaknesses and develop new techniques to overcome these. Of paramount importance is the fact that you will sharpen your awareness of yourself and will continually test your commitment to the teaching profession.

In brief, field experience and student teaching is your “once in a career” opportunity for growth in a sheltered environment. Enjoy this time and make the most of it.
