Specialty Tests must be taken on one of seven national test dates. (See Registration Bulletin or http://www.ets.org/praxis for test schedule and registration deadlines.)

Notes:

  1. If an applicant for an initial teaching license achieves the minimal acceptable score for an examination at the time she/he completes the teacher preparation program, and applies for the license, that score may be used for licensing.  However, an applicant who has not applied for a license must pass any examination or test that has been added after the applicant completed the preparation program.
  2. As of September 1, 1999, a candidate who has not passed any part of the Core Battery Tests can only use the Pre-Professional Skills (PPST, C-PPST, or CBT) to qualify for licensing.
  3. The Basic Skills (Praxis I) tests are required for admission into the Teacher Education programs.  They are also required for your initial teaching license.  You should take the PPST in your sophomore year!
  4. The Specialty Area (Praxis II) tests are required for receiving your initial teaching license.  Successful completion of Specialty Area tests corresponds to your major area.  You should take the Specialty Test(s) just prior to or during your student teaching semester!
  5. You are only required to take the Specialty Area Test(s) in your original major content area.  If you wish to become certified in more than one area, you do not need to take a licensing exam in your additional content areas(s). However, you may need to submit more than one license application if you wish to become certified in more than one content area.  Please see Jim Beard, Licensing Advisor, if you have questions about this.
  6. Middle school tests are for the Rules 2002 Early Adolescent Generalist license; therefore, these tests may not be used for individuals licensed at the high school level.
  7. Teachers under Rules 2002 wishing to become licensed in Middle School core contents areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and/or Social Studies must take the Praxis II exam in one of the middle school areas they wish to become licensed.
  8. If you have attempted and failed one or more portions of the Praxis I (PPST) you may utilize the FREE online tutorial study program known as PLATO by contacting the School of Education for a training session at 260-481-6449.

*  Teacher candidates applying for the Preschool and Elementary: Primary school settings license may take either the 0020 Early Childhood Education exam OR the 0011 Elementary Education exam.
