FAQs

What do I have to do to renew my license?

Indiana requires that you complete six college credit hours within five years of the time you apply to renew your license. The licensing advisor at the institution where the work is taken and the renewal is applied for must approve these credits. Once the credits have been earned, you may apply for your renewal by contacting the licensing office at the institution where you completed your coursework for the renewal. Renewal applications cannot be made sooner than 60 days before the expiration date on the license. For IPFW students, information about renewing your license is available online.

Visit the Indiana Professional Standards Board website for more frequently asked questions about license renewal.

I have a valid Indiana teaching license. How do I get licensed in another state?

Indiana has reciprocity with 36 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. In these regions, since you have a valid Indiana teaching license, you can obtain at least a one-year reciprocal license. In that time, you may need to meet specific requirements for that state before you are awarded a regular license. In the other 14 states (Alaska, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wisconsin), an evaluation will be completed by that state and you may need to satisfy any specific requirements for that state before obtaining any license. In all situations, you should contact the Department of Education in the state(s) you are interested in for more specific information. Links to the Department of Education in all 50 states are available online.
