Building A Class Schedule
After deciding what classes you want to take, you will need to build your class schedule. You may find this worksheet helpful.
For each course you plan to take, you will need to know the five digit course reference number (CRN). You can find this information in the Schedule of Classes or online.
Step 1: Identify the course you wish to take that has the least number of sections offered. Remember that:
- Each section represents the specific times and days of the week that the course it taught.
- Many classes are offered more than once. Notice for example, how many different times ENG W131 is offered. On the other hand, some courses are only offered once.
- Some sections of a course may be filled by the time you begin to work on your schedule. Check for closed classes here.
Step 2: After you have selected your first course, then proceed to the course with the next fewest number of sections building it around your first course—and so on—until you have a complete draft of your schedule. Be sure that your draft includes the five digit course reference numbers. This will save you from having to hunt back through the schedule book when you are registering online.
Step 3: If you are registering late, make out an alternative schedule. It is possible that some course sections will already be filled and having some alternatives will be helpful to you.
Other Helpful Hints
- Balance your classes between MWF and TR.
- Give yourself a break between classes.
- Remember that some classes have a lecture and lab and you may need to register for both.
- Ask other students for tips.
