School of Education Student Checkpoints

1st Checkpoint: For Admission to Teacher Education (Block 1)

  1. Pass PPST. Recommendation: Take PPST late in your freshman year or early in your sophomore year after completing at least ENG W131 and at least one non-remedial math course.
    • Passing scores:
      • Reading: 176
      • Writing: 172
      • Math: 175
  2. Completion of at least 45 credit hours with a minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA including all coursework taken from all previously attended institutions.
  3. B or better in: ENG W131, COM 114, EDUC W200; C or better in MA 101, EDUC K201; Pass EDUA F300.
    Note: Students who began working on Rules 2002 requirements prior to Fall 2004 have slightly different requirements. See your advisor if you have questions or concerns.
  4. 1st portfolio checkpoint (initial establishment of a portfolio in F300)

2nd Checkpoint: For Admission to Professional Education (Block 2)

  1. Admitted to Teacher Education (see above).
  2. Junior Status. (60 credits completed, including at least half in each Gen. Ed. area, excluding Area VI. In General Education Area I, two of three MA courses must be completed.)
  3. Minimum 2.00 GPA in each General Education area.
  4. 2.50 Cumulative GPA including all coursework taken from all previously attended institutions.
  5. 2nd portfolio checkpoint (scoring assessment) in EDUC P249.
  6. Completion of Block 1.

3rd Checkpoint: For Admission to Student Teaching

  1. Complete a Limited Criminal History check.
  2. Complete an application for student teaching one year before intended student teaching semester.
  3. Schedule an appointment and meet with the Director of Field Services before the published deadline. (approximately one year before intended student teaching semester)
  4. Completion of all general education requirements, Block 1, Block 2 and Block 3 (except 6 cr. hrs. electives).
  5. 3rd portfolio checkpoint (scoring assessment) in Blocks 2 and 3.

4th Checkpoint: Final Assessment

  1. 4th portfolio check point (scoring assessment).
  2. Completion of student teaching and all course requirements.
  3. Completion of each course in professional education with a grade of C or higher, with an overall GPA in professional education courses of 2.50 or higher.
  4. Pass Praxis II specialty area exam(s), required for license but not graduation.

5th Checkpoint: Verification for Completion of Degree/Certification

  1. Apply for graduation/license.
  2. Final Indiana University GPA of 2.5 or higher.
 

For an exception to any of the above requirements, a student should request permission for a waiver in writing from the Associate Dean of the School of Education. All waiver requests must be submitted at least 10 days before classes begin.
