Help for Students with Disabilities

Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) at IPFW and is located in the Walb Student Union, Room 113, on the Fort Wayne campus and is staffed by certified professionals to assist all enrolled students with qualifying disabilities in accordance with Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The main office telephone number is 260-481-6657 for either voice/TTD.

Some examples of the services and accommodations SSD routinely provides or coordinates for distance education students include the following:

  • Notification memorandums to distance education instructors to advise them of possible accommodations needs and equal access recommendations from SSD.
  • Transcriptions of video format courses through special vendors and note-takers for students who are Hard of Hearing or Deaf.
  • Assistance with the coordination of special tables or accessible classroom equipment for students with mobility or dexterity limitations at off campus instructional sites.
  • Courtesy use of accommodated test proctor equipment at the Fort Wayne campus for special format tests or quizzes for low vision disability access needs.
  • Coordination of student memberships and ordering assistance and other production support for audio format textbooks programs and course materials for students who qualify for these accommodations.

Possible use of adaptive equipment and the dedicated SSD assistive computer technology lab for various academic access needs is available for distance education students as required for equal academic access. Voice recognition programs, two and four track tape recorder loan program, text reading machines, scanners, spell checker devices, one-hand format keyboards, foot-controlled mouse devices, wireless remote keyboards and mouse devices, portable hand held CCTV loan program, magnification software, and use of the open lab ADA computer workstations at multiple computer labs across the IPFW campus are resources for all registered SSD students with disabilities.
