Student Leadership for Diversity

Request for Proposals

  • Do you have an idea for enhancing the climate for diversity at IPFW?
  • Would you like to earn academic credit for putting your idea into action?

If you answered yes to the above, IPFW’s new Student Leadership for Diversity program may be for you. The program offers students the opportunity to complete a year-long project related to IPFW’s diversity goals, earn 3 credits, and receive funding to attend the 19 th Annual Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE), May 30 through June 3, 2006, in Chicago. Through this year-long experience you will:

  • Meet and network with students and professionals across the country through participation in the NCORE conference
  • Meet and network with faculty, staff, and students at IPFW
  • Develop leadership skills

  • Receive 3 academic credits in an independent study course
  • Present your project at the Diversity Initiatives Showcase in Spring of 2007
  • Gain valuable experience for your résumé

Possible Projects

Projects should help to educate the IPFW community about diversity issues, promote communication and understanding across cultures, and bring people together for mutual learning and enjoyment. Examples of possible projects could include, but are certainly not limited to:

  • Organize a conference or a seminar series
  • Research with presentation of findings
  • Create a Speakers Bureau or Network
  • Community outreach or partnership
  • Multimedia project
  • Interactive Theatre

Students whose proposals are approved are expected to attend monthly Diversity Council meetings spring 2006 through spring 2007, attend an NCORE Conference preparation meeting, and present their project at the spring 2007 Diversity Initiatives Showcase.

Eligibility

To be considered for this program, students must:

  • Be interested in promoting diversity at IPFW
  • Be enrolled full-time at the time of application through spring of 2007.
  • Have a proposal for a diversity-related project that can be mentored by a faculty member and receive independent study credit
  • Have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Be available to attend the NCORE 2006 Conference in Chicago (May 30 through June 3) and fully participate by
    • attending a minimum of 20 session hours,
    • attending evening group meetings,
    • submitting journal entries about your NCORE experience

If you need help identifying a faculty member for your proposed project, please contact the Diversity Council prior to submitting your application.

Application Requirements

Applicants must complete the attached cover sheet and provide a letter of application that specifically addresses the items listed below.

  • Your academic interests and achievements
  • Your leadership interests and experience
  • Your project proposal, approved by a faculty sponsor. Team projects are encouraged. Two or more students may work together on one project approved by a faculty member.
  • Your commitment and availability to participate fully in the following:
    1. NCORE Conference, May 30- June 3, 2006
    2. Diversity Council meetings, Spring 2006 through Spring 2007
    3. Diversity Initiatives Showcase, March 2007

Your application must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from your faculty sponsor. Your IPFW academic record will be obtained to complete your application.

Notification of Acceptance

You will be notified of the status of your proposal by the end of January 2006. Students or student teams whose proposals are accepted will be asked to apply to the NCORE College Board/NCORE Student Scholarship Program, to receive funding for their conference registration.
