Diversity Accomplishments, 2004

This report summarizes work accomplished in 2004 on behalf of IPFW’s diversity goals, which are stated globally by Goal 2 of the campus Strategic Plan:

to create an exceptional campus environment for a diverse community of learners.

This goal encompasses not only campus climate issues, but also the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body as well as curriculum transformation and community outreach. Strategies to accomplish the goal are defined by schools, departments, organizations, and other units in keeping with their respective missions. The initiatives and activities reported reflect the energy, commitment, and creativity of IPFW faculty, staff, and students on behalf of achieving diversity goals.

The report is organized according to five strategic themes: Student Recruitment and Retention; Faculty and Staff Recruitment and Retention; Campus Climate; Curriculum; and Community Outreach. For 2004, we can document progress in student recruitment, course/curriculum transformation, and community outreach. Areas where progress is slow are student retention and faculty/staff recruitment and retention. Enrollment statistics and faculty/staff demographics are tracked to measure progress. An area that is very difficult to measure is campus climate: we can document significant activities intended to enhance understanding of and appreciation for diversity, but until now, we have lacked a baseline for measuring progress toward improving the climate for diversity. The first comprehensive campus climate survey was conducted in 2005; the results are reported under Campus Climate Survey.
