The Director of the RF/Microwave Laboratory is Dr. Abdullah Eroglu. Our research is sponsored by governmental agencies, such as the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the National Science Foundation, and by industrial companies, such as Sonnet, Ansys Ansoft, and Regal-Beloit.

Current Projects

Low Power, Long Range UHF RFID Systems (Nathan Reynolds †)

RFID technology is used in several applications including supply chain management, public transportation, access control. The combination of RFID technology with sensory systems has extended the applications of RFID technology to environmental monitoring, and healthcare applications. The available sensors usually operate at Medium Frequency (MF) to High Frequency ranges (HF) (3MHz-30MHz). However, these sensors have the inconvenience of limited reading distance (a few cm) and high cost. In order to overcome this limitation, RFID sensor development has been focused on RFID tags using the Ultra High Frequency bands (868MHz, 900MHz and higher). In RFID systems, tags are usually attached to the object that is to be identified. If the object has significant effects on nearby electromagnetic fields, the operation of the tag antenna is likely to be affected. Therefore, one of the most challenging problems for RFID systems is to optimize the tag antenna performance in complex environments. In this thesis, a novel UHF RFID tag antenna that has long range and low profile, which is mountable on metallic surfaces, will be developed and designed using microstrip patch antenna structure using 3D Electromagnetic Simulator, Ansoft HFSS. The tag antenna will then be implemented on a low-loss microwave material and measured. The simulation and measurement results will be compared.
