DECCO Operating Principles

• The purpose of DECCO is to coordinate the work of university offices and services involved in the development and delivery of web-based distance (off-campus students) and distributed (on-campus) education.

• All DECCO distance learning programs will be promoted and delivered through the Division of Continuing Studies. Distributed education projects will be assisted through the Office of Academic Affairs.

• DECCO supported courses will be transformed from traditional classroom formats through use of the web and other appropriate media to support active learning and enhance student-faculty interaction.

• DECCO project development teams will assist faculty in such transformation and will include technical support, training in the use of specific software or hardware, assistance with graphics, media, and consultation about pedagogy.

• DECCO services and support to faculty and to departments will include instructional development, faculty development, hardware and software design and support, financing assistance, marketing, enrollment services, and library services.

• DECCO supported programs will meet all program, ICHE, and NCA accreditation requirements for distance and distributed learning.

• All DECCO supported courses will include a thorough assessment of the impact of technology on student learning and of DECCO’s larger goals.

• DECCO supported distance programs will serve students admitted to IPFW according to standard criteria for admissions and eligibility for financial aid.

• DECCO emphasizes on ease of access for students, both access to the course(s) and access to support services.

• DECCO will collaborate with CELT, LRC, and ITServices for faculty development.

• DECCO will work with ITServices to coordinate the provision of appropriate hardware and software tools for distance and distributed course development and delivery, including adequate security.

• DECCO will seek to assure that services to distance students will parallel those available to on-campus students (i.e. orientation to technology, admissions, financial aid, advising, registration, access to academic support programs, career services, etc.)

• At this time, the priority for DECCO distributed courses is required or general education courses and the priority for distance projects is the distance delivery of degree or certificate programs.
