But like the many adults who want to complete their education, advance their careers, or change professions, you probably are wondering ˜
Can I afford to go back to college?
Can I continue to work full time and go to school?
Is there an opportunity to apply my old credits?
The answer to all three questions is: Yes!
Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.) offers unique features that appeal to adults, like you, who come back to school highly motivated with a wealth of accumulated knowledge and the desire to be in charge of their academic experience. Because B.G.S. students choose the courses they take, they can select courses that fit their work schedule. If you wish, you could opt to complete the degree entirely online, allowing you to study anywhere and any time. (Like any other course at IPFW, online courses qualify for financial aid.) Many previously earned credits, including those from other accredited colleges and universities, military service, and placement exams such as CLEP, may apply toward your B.G.S. You will need to meet with an advisor to find out how much will transfer.
With the help of an advisor, students choose the course of study that fits their personal goals and interests. Students are encouraged to incorporate minors and professional certificates into their degree programs, allowing them to gain career credentials as they earn degree credit. Popular choices include minors in business, communications, organizational leadership and supervision, psychology, and sociology. Certificate options include the Advanced Manufacturing Certificate and the Small Business Management Certificate.
There is no time limit for completing a General Studies degree. In addition, you may be able to apply previously earned credits to your degree including the following:
General Studies advisors have been recognized to be among the best in the state for academic guidance and ongoing support. They can steer you through the admissions process, show you where to apply for financial aid, and suggest courses and professors who are a good fit for you.
The General Studies degree can be completed entirely online on your time, in face-to-face classes taught on campus during the day, in the evening, or on the weekend, at off-campus sites, or in any combination that is convenient for you.
The IU degree you will receive is nationally recognized and fully accredited — a great launching point for job advancement or graduate study. General Studies graduates have used their degrees to pursue careers and further study in areas such as business, public relations, medicine, law, education, and social work.
“Thirty hours of my military training transfered in as elective credit. I graduated from IPFW with a bachelor’s degree and a commission as U.S. Army second lieutenant.”

Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army
"Sometimes we make excuses for not going back to school, like: ‘I can’t afford it;’ ‘I don’t want to quit my job;’ ‘I don’t want to start over.’ Well, none of that’s true! Working on my bachelor’s degree has been rewarding every step of the way!"
