The Department of Fine Arts maintains classrooms and studios that meet the needs of the Fine Arts students. The Visual Arts Building is 22 years old and houses faculty offices, classrooms, computer labs and studios where the majority of our courses are taught. The building houses more than a dozen large, well-equipped studios for ceramics, drawing, metalsmithing, painting, printmaking and sculpture, as well as computer labs and lecture and digital classrooms. Included in our space are indoor and outdoor ceramic kilns. There is a conference room and lecture hall in the Visual Arts Building as well. Art History classes are taught in our building as well as other lecture halls on campus. Art Education uses studio space in the Visual Arts Building as well as a classroom/studio in another building (Kettler Hall) on campus.
Student access to the building is generous; most advanced students receive individual work spaces within the Visual Arts Building in their respective areas of concentration. Individual studios are available in the Mobile Classroom Building, a short walk from the Visual Arts building. This shared space can accommodate eight students in private cubicles which average 8’ x 10’. There is also an area for critiquing student's work. Students have 24/7 access to this studio space. Studios are reserved for advanced B.F.A. students primarily in painting and drawing.
The Department of Fine Arts uses the Visual Arts Gallery in the College of Visual and Performing Arts to show a variety of rotating exhibitions. Various shows by visiting artists and faculty make up our exhibition calendar. This space is also used in the spring for the Fine Arts Senior B.F.A. Exhibition each year. The senior exhibition is an ongoing event for three weeks and the public has access to the gallery during regular building hours. Fine Arts materials are housed in Helmke Library, the main library on campus.
