College of Arts and Sciences

Department of Chemistry

Welcome, from the Chair of Chemistry

The department provides an opportunity for students to explore the nature and significance of chemistry, considered by many as the “Central Science.” Achievements in chemistry have allowed us to know more about ourselves and the world around us. The student of chemistry will become aware of the special way that chemists view the world, the nature of chemical experimentation, its results and their significance within the fields of science and human exploration.

The department prides itself in offering a quality education which allows students at all levels to learn to think critically. In addition to students acquiring knowledge through coursework, the department also provides opportunities for learning through research.

The Bachelor’s degrees provide excellent preparation for graduate study in chemistry as well as for professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, business and education.

Departmental Mission Statement

The IPFW Department of Chemistry engages its students with the body of knowledge that is the modern Chemical Sciences, encouraging them to become both critical thinkers and participatory members of the local, national, and global society.  This engagement fundamentally rests on the scholarly vitality of the department’s faculty as teachers, as mentors and advisers, as researchers, as participants in our local community, and as members of a world-wide scientific community.  In addition to guiding and challenging a range of students – chemistry majors, students satisfying General Education requirements, and students for whom Chemistry is an important supporting discipline – to optimize their critical thinking skills, the course of study in the Department of Chemistry also forms the foundation for a career as a chemical professional and for advanced study in both graduate and professional schools.
