A team of Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) students is claiming top honors this week in the Business Strategy Game (BSG). Team members Derek Fiechter, Jordan Montgomery, Kelli Paduano, and Seth Snyder are in the senior capstone strategy class taught by Associate Professor of Small Business and Entrepreneurship William Todorovic. The class is a requirement for all business majors.
According to its website, the BSG is an “…online exercise where class members are divided into teams and assigned the task of running an athletic footwear company in head-to-head competition against companies managed by other class members.” Each company has to sell branded and private label athletic shoes in Europe, Africa, North America, the Asia-Pacific region, and Latin America. Every aspect of the game parallels the real-world athletic shoe market. The players have to come up with strategies that result in a positive brand image, keep the company on track for market leadership, and produce good financial performances.
In an e-mail to Todorovic, the game’s creators congratulated the team for earning a Global Top 100 ranking for their company’s performance during the week of October 31 through November 11. “The co-managers of C Comfort Zone (Company C) earned a Global Top 100 ranking on the following performance criteria:
• Overall Game-To-Date Score - Their Overall Score of 110.0 tied for the best Overall Score performance of the week, worldwide.
• Return on Average Equity - Their ROE of 43.0 percent was the 59th best ROE performance of the week, worldwide.
• Stock Price - Their Stock Price of $320.79 was the 85th best Stock Price performance of the week, worldwide.
You should be quite proud of your students for such an excellent performance—a performance that reflects quite well on you and the caliber of instruction that students are receiving in your course.”
There are nearly 5,000 teams from 301 colleges and universities taking part in the contest.
