The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is a four to five-hour test that is administered by The College Board, offered nationwide on a voluntary basis, and measures critical reading, math, and writing abilities. Scores were recorded on a 200-800 scale for each of the sections (math, verbal, and writing), making the total battery score in a range from 600 to 2400. A score of 500 in each section (a total of 1500) is an average score for tests taken after 2005 which include the written section. This writing section was added in 2005.
The purpose of the SAT is to assist admission officers in evaluating applications for admission to college. The use of SAT scores combined with the high school record increases the accuracy of the prediction of college freshman grades over the use of SAT scores or the high school record alone.
