Definitions, Sources and Caveats:
1. Fetal Death Rate: Fetal Deaths divided by (Fetal Deaths plus Live Births) multiplied by 1000. Source: Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana Mortality Report. Most states use this definition, while other states and areas define fetal deaths differently, such as by birth weight (from 350 grams to 500 grams), different gestation weeks ranging from all products of conception, 16 or 20 weeks, and some states use a combination of weeks and grams. In most cases, an attempt is being made to separate early pregnancy loss (spontaneous abortion) from later pregnancy loss. Other synonyms include “stillbirth”, “prenatal death”, and “fetal demise”.
