Definitions, Explanations, Comments
Average Annual Wage data are compiled from reports submitted by employers subject to state and federal unemployment insurance laws. This excludes workers on most agricultural farms, all members of the Armed Forces, elected officials in most states, most railroad employees, most student workers, and employees of certain non-profit organizations. Workers on paid vacation and part-time workers are included. Therefore, the average pay is influenced by the percentage of part-time workers versus full time workers, the number of "executives" versus "hourly" employees, etc. The data shown has not been adjusted for inflation.
Per Capita Personal Income is total personal income divided by the resident population as of July 1 of the same year. Personal income is the sum of net earnings by place of residence, rental income of persons, personal dividend income, personal interest income, and transfer payments (e.g. social security). Note that the resident population is all people, including children and the elderly. Therefore, the age composition of the resident population can influence substantially the per capita personal income of an area.
