Definitions, Explanations, Comments
The Unemployment Rate is determined by dividing the number of unemployed persons by the number of persons in the labor force. The labor force consists of those persons who are employed or actively seeking employment. Those not actively seeking employment (e.g. retirees) and certain other groups (e.g. children and persons in jail) are not included in the labor force. The data are obtained from a monthly household survey and other data collected by the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Only about 800 households are sampled in Indiana, and therefore, one should be cautious in interpreting reported short-run changes in the unemployment rate at the state or metropolitan level.
