See tables for:

or reference AllenCountyProfile.org for population data and
Populations for the nine counties that
comprise northeast Indiana.
Recent demographic changes for Allen County are highlighted in our
current report:
A Profile of Allen County . (This
report requires Adobe Acrobat for viewing.) Also, as reference above, there is now a web site devoted to Allen County data,. AllenCountyProfile.org. Some highlights from this
analysis of the 2000 Census include:
-
The population is aging. The median age in Allen County in 1970
was 26.0. In 2000, it was 34.1. (The State's median
age in 2000 was 35.2, and the Fort Wayne MSA's median age was
34.3.)
- Allen
County's super seniors-those 75 and over-grew at a rate of 25%
during the decade. This is 2 1/2 times faster than the county's
overall growth rate in the same period.
- The
number of households in Allen County continued to grow, but the
make-up of these households is changing. In 1980, 75% of all households
were family households; in 2000, only 2/3 were family households.
- In
family households with children under the age of 18, the number
of single adult head of household (male or female) has tripled
since 1970-from 4,122 to 12,836 in 2000.
- In
1970, the white race comprised almost 93% of the Allen County
population. In 2000, whites made up 83%. Other races are Black,
Asian, American Indian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and
while not technically a race, the 2000 Census offered "2 or more
races" as an option. By the way, this option experienced the largest
percentage growth between 1990 and 2000 of all the races in Allen
County.
- The
Hispanic population (see note) continued to
grow dramatically- almost 150% between 1990 and 2000.
THE LONG FORM STATISTICS....graphically
speaking...
In May, 2002, the Census Bureau released statistics
compiled from the "long form" These contain profiles of selected
social, economic, and housing characteristics. CRI has charted some
of these profiles and presented them here. If you are interested
in more information, you can review the Census Page or contact CRI.
(Allen County is shown here-data available at a
county, town, or congressional district level.
CRI does aggregate data, e.g. the nine county NEI area could be
shown)
EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT
The Bureau of the Census provides estimates and projections of the
population for states during the non-census years. In Indiana, Indiana
Business Research Center (IBRC) serves as the state's official
representative in the US Census Bureau's 50-state cooperative on
population estimates and projections. For example, IBRC has the
following statement on their web page: "The first estimates of population
since the census was taken in April of 2000 have been released for
the U.S. and 50 states. Indiana maintained its rank as the 14th
largest state in the nation, but was among 29 states with a 15-month
growth rate (at 0.56%) slower than the nation (1.2%). ..." IBRC
will use those estimates and their demographic knowledge to produce
estimates for each county in Indiana. Some of the factors to be
considered include deaths, births, migration. As soon as IBRC produces
these estimates, CRI will use those numbers when calculating and
reporting changes in northeast Indiana.
NOTE regarding Hispanic origin: The following
definition and background information on Hispanic origin was reproduced
from: The Hispanic Population in the United States: March 1993,
Current Population Reports, Population Characteristics, Series P20-475.
Hispanic Origin. Persons of Hispanic origin were identified by a
question that asked for self-identification of the person's origin
or descent. Respondents were asked to select their origin (and the
origin of other household members) from a "flash card" listing ethnic
origins. Persons of Hispanic origin, in particular, were those who
indicated that their origin was Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central
or South American, or some other Hispanic origin. It should be noted
that persons of Hispanic origin may be of any race.
