Diapering/Toileting

It is the responsibility of parents to provide an unopened bag of disposable diapers and box of wipes for those children in diapers. The diapers will be marked with your child’s name and used only for your child. The wipes are a donation to keep us supplied during the semester. If your child attends for only short times, a small bag of diapers (24–36) will most likely be adequate. Our storage is such that we can only accommodate a few of the large bags of diapers. Parents will be notified when diapers need to be replenished.

Our 2-year-old children are changed or taken to the toilet at least once every two hours and as needed at other times. A diaper chart is kept next to the sign-in clipboard for you to check their progress through the time they are in attendance. If your child is in the middle of potty training, it is a must to send extra clothing with them. Please place in a bag with the child’s name on it. If necessary, we also keep extra clothing on hand for the rare, unexpected accident. In that case, please wash the clothing and return it to the center.

When children are in the first stages of potty training, it is most helpful to send them in clothing that is easily removed. We encourage independence and will encourage the child to take down and pull up his/her clothing by his/herself. At this beginning time, it may also be imperative to remove the clothing quickly, if the child waits too long.

Toileting accidents are handled matter-of-factly. The child is reassured that everyone has accidents and that it is ok, is changed into dry clothing, and reminded that he or she may ask to used the bathroom at any time. Care is used to avoid embarrassment to the child. We have found that children who are recently potty trained tend to have more frequent accidents when first starting at the center, until they have become more comfortable in their new surroundings.

An incident report will be sent home describing any toileting accidents for those children under two. Wet clothing will be placed in a plastic bag with the child’s name written on it.
