Ultraviolet Visible Absorption Spectrophotometer

Most compounds absorb ultraviolet (UV) and visible (Vis) light.  If a compound has color, then it usually means that visible light is being absorbed. Although we can't get much structural information this way, the amount of light absorbed at a given wavelength is related to how much of the compound is there.  UV-Vis spectrophotometers are often used to  tell us how much is present if we know compound's identity.
