Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrophotometer (NMR)
Based on their behavior in a magnetic field, it is possible to detect certain nuclei. This instrument can detect 1H, 2H, 13C, 19F, and 31P nuclei. The way a nucleus behaves in a magnetic field is strongly influenced by the fields around each atom which in turn is affected by the overall structure. By close inspection of the nuclear time and frequency data (the spectrum) in a magnetic field it is often possible to determine its complete structure. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) are nothing more than time spectra of the human body.
