| Chromatography
is a general term describing a variety of methods used to separate compounds.
In chromatography, a mixture is placed in a flowing (mobile phase) liquid
or gas. This mobile phase is passed over a stationary phase (solid
or liquid). The components of the mixture will temporarily stick
to the stationary phase before eventually being swept away to some type
of detector. The stickiness of each component of the mixture will
be different. They will then be swept along at different rates and
be separated. In HPLC, the mobile phase is an organic liquid and
the stationary phase is a solid such as silica, alumina or alkylated silica. |
