CHM 258 Announcements
5/9/07
·
I have
organized all the notebooks and graded reports.
You can pick them up in the chemistry office. When I get a chance I may post a list of
grades similar to those for CHM 256. I
used the cutoffs listed in the 3/29 announcement. I will be holding onto the Report 5 papers so
that I can improve the procedure for the experiment. If you really need them back, I can get them
to you.

5/2/07
- Remember
that you must check out in order to receive a grade other than incomplete,
you must check out of your locker.
Please make an appointment with me to do so. I prefer times around noon each day.
- I
have listed below remaining due dates and changes. The red box for reports and notebooks
will be outside my office whenever I am on campus. Otherwise, it will be in the Chemistry
Department office.
- Notebook: May 4th 12:00 PM (noon) Do not write compound
tables for Exp. 8 and 9.
- Report 9: due May 3rd 6:00 PM
- Report 8: due May 3rd 6:00 PM Unfortunately, I
caused confusion about what questions to answer. I had wanted questions 1 – 9, but
considering what I previously announced, you need to answer only
questions 1 – 8.
- Report 6: due May 3rd 6:00 PM The GC’s will not be
required. I will probably still
check the samples, but only for purposes of improving the procedure. Remember that due to impurities, you
should not include the NMR integration values in the journal procedure.
- I will be working on the clicker points in CHM 256. After that, I will finish grading
Report 3C. If you haven’t
turned it in, you need to do so soon.
4/27/07
- I
am still working on NMR’s and
GC’s. If you don’t get
them today, I will bring them to the final on Monday.
- Dr.
Ericson wants to dispose of the Exp. 8 plates. Try to have at least one member of your
group look at the plates after CHM 256 lecture.
4/24/07
- As
stated last week, for all sections, this will be the order of events for
the last lab class,
- Announcements
- Evaluations
- Last
experiments and check out.
- Check Out Procedure
a. Clean everything including hot plates and ring stands.
b. Wipe out your drawer and hood.
c. Check for any missing equipment.
d. Replace any missing equipment.
e. Pay all bills to the Bursar.
f. Line up all equipment on a bench in the order they appear in the equipment
list.
g. Any instructor or Alison can check you out.
h. You are done!
- In
the Quiz 2, the #2 question was thrown out. The Aldol
Condensation question was made extra credit. Since the Friday class had an advantage
since they heard more about the reaction in CHM 256 lecture, all
borderline grades at the end of the semester for the other sections will
be given an extra 2 point consideration. The reasons for the changes will
be explained in lab. The score was
then out of 25 points but was prorated to 30 points.
- Since
the situation has made it difficult to get all Exp. 6 NMR’s
and GC’s to everyone, the report will be due Thur.
May 3 at 6:00 PM with the other reports.
This data will be provided in CHM 256 lecture or can be picked
up. Also, for the journal procedure
in Exp. 6, do not include the integration for the NMR data. The impurities in some samples are
significant which will make the data difficult to interpret.
4/19/07
- We
are missing 2 Teflon thermometer adaptors.
They are normally mounted on the front of your hood. Please check your drawers and replace
them if you have one.
- For
Report 8, do not do the last question.
4/18/07
- Give
your instructor your sample Exp. 6.
They will run the GC for you.
4/17/07
- The report from for Exp. 8 has been posted. It will be due Thurs. May 3 at 6:00 PM.
- The notebooks will be due Fri. May 4 at 12:00 PM (noon).
- For all sections, this will be the order of events for the last
lab class,
- Announcements
- Evaluations
- Last experiments and check out.
4/12/07
- Report
3B has been graded. The averages
were 6.8 (T 9 AM), 8.3 (W 3 PM), and 8.1 (R 2:30 PM). The range of scores was 10, 9.3, 8.9,
8.9, 8.8, 8.8, 8.7, 8.7, 8.6, 8.6, 8.4, 8.4, 8.3, 8.3, 8.3, 8.2, 8.2, 8.2,
8, 8, 7.9, 7.9, 7.8, 7.8, 7.5, 7.4, 7.4, 7.4, 7.4, 7, 6.9, 6.7, 6.2, 5.8,
5.4, and 1.9. Some scores would
have been significantly higher, but spectra and/or samples were not turned
in.
4/11/07
- At
this point, 6 students have completed the NMR’s
for their unknowns and 5 have completed the 1H NMR for Exp.
6. Please turn in NMR samples when
you can. You can actually run them
in lab.
4/10/07
- The
replacement procedure for Exp. 5 has been posted on the procedures
page. Please note the following
about it.
- It
is a molecular modeling and computational chemistry experiment.
- No
outline is necessary for it.
- Most
of it can and should be performed outside of lab. A small portion of it must be performed
on the larger computer in the P-chem lab (SB
454).
- There
are 2 links on the procedures page for it.
- One
link is the procedure.
- The
second link gives your name and your compound structures for the
experiment.
- No
notebook entries will be required for it.
- The
report form for it has been posted.
It will be due the week of April 23.
- For
Experiment 6, you will not obtain a polarimeter reading. When the GC is ready, you will obtain a
GC of your sample.
- Report
Form 6 has been posted. It will be
due the week of April 23.
- Report
Form 9 has been posted. It will be
due Thurs. May 3 by 6:00 PM.
- Quiz
2 will be given the week of April 16.
It will cover the notes and experiments from the last quiz through
today. Last year’s quiz will be posted.
4/2/07
- Upon
request, I can provide unknowns for Exp. 9.
- The
Procedure for Exp. 8 has been posted.
- Please
Note!!! For Experiment 8, the bulk
of the experiment must be performed in 1 lab period. The pre-lab preparation by the stockroom
and the instructors is very extensive, and we can’t spend the time
and material preparing for it for more than one week. This
means that the only time you must perform the experiment is during the
week of April 16. If you
can’t make it during the normal lab period, you must show up to one
of the other labs during that week.
- Note
Sets 6, 7, and 8 have been posted.
These are the last note sets for the course.
3/30/07
- Report
Form 4 has been posted. It will be
due the week of April 9.
3/29/07
- The
current cutoffs for the course will be A > 86%, B > 78%, C > 58%
D > 50%, F < 50%.
- Remember,
grades of C, D, and F occur when reports are not
turned in or tuned in incomplete.
3/28/07
- The
261gas method will be better for analyzing your essential oil by GC-MS on
the GCQ.
- The
HP-INCOS is still not quite ready for use for the essential oil.
- Dr. Tahmassebi will hand back Report 3B on Friday at 2:30
PM. If your report is late, it
needs to get in before that date.
3/27/07
- Report
3 A has been graded. The averages
were 7.79 (T 9 AM), 8.18 (W 3 PM), and 8.48 (R 2:30 PM). The range of scores was 9.9, 9.6, 9.6,
9.3, 9.3, 9.2, 9.1, 9, 9, 9, 9, 8.9, 8.9, 8.9, 8.9, 8.8, 8.6, 8.6, 8.4,

5.5, and 3.4.
- Quiz
2 has been graded. The averages
were 15.7(T 9 AM), 15.6 (W 3 PM), and 15.4 (R 2:30 PM). The range of scores was 20, 20, 19.5,
19.2, 18.5, 18.5, 18.5, 18.5, 18, 18, 17.5, 17.5, 17, 17, 17, 16.5, 16.5,
16, 15.9, 15.7, 15.5, 15.5, 15.5, 15, 15, 15, 15, 14, 14, 14, 13, 13,
12.7, 12.2, 9, 8, and 4.5.
3/26/07
- The
special instructions for Exp. 6 have been posted.
- Report
3A will be returned this week. If
you are late and it is turned in by 9 AM tomorrow, it will be too late.
3/22/07
- Note
Set 5 has been posted.
3/21/07
- Experiments
5 and 7 will not be performed this semester. Please prepare for Exp. 6 for next week.
- When
rinsing salt plates for IR, rinse them over a beaker and not a waste
bottle. Salt plates have been
dropped into the waste bottle and ruined.
- Note:
Please cite Alex Howard when you use the phrase “If it smells like
tacos, it is cumin.”
3/20/07
- The
report form for Exp. 3C has been posted.
It will be due at the end of your lab period next week.
- A
link to a procedure for using the HP-INCOS GC-MS procedure has been
posted. You should be able to use
either GC-MS for Exp. 4.
- Two
in class experiments will be removed form the schedule. This is due to the loss of one week of
lab and because I normally place one more experiment than may be possible
in the schedule. The experiment due
to weather will be replaced by a computer experiment which will be announced
soon. The grading scale will be
adjusted to take into account the other lost experiment. The experiments to be removed will be
posted soon.
3/14/07
- The
notebooks for the T and W sections have been graded. I am entering grades in a different
manner this semester. I will write
the # of points lost for the entries provided when the notebooks are
collected. At the end of the
semester, I will total the points lost and then subtract that from 65
(total points possible for notebook).
If you lost 2.5 points, then your notebook grade at this time is
62.5/65. Please avoid the mistakes
indicated in your notebook so that you can get the maximum possible grade.
- Quiz
1 will be given next week. It will cover all lab notes before spring break
except the Aldol Condensation. There may be questions about
cross-linked proteins and the reaction of thiols
with peroxides. There will be a
question about theoretical yield, % yield, and limiting reagents.
- One
of last year’s quizzes is provided as a link on the home page. This time there will be no glassware
questions however.
3/13/07
- Report
2 has been graded. The averages
were 16.5 (T 9:00 AM), 17.1 (W 3:00 PM), and 17.6 (R 2:30 PM). The range of scores was 19.7, 19.2, 19,
19, 18.9, 18.9, 18.6, 18.4, 18.3, 18.2, 18.2, 18.2, 18.2, 18.1, 17.9,
17.8, 17.8, 17.5, 17.5, 17.5, 17.5, 16.8, 16.8, 16.7, 16.7, 16.6, 16.5,
16.5, 15.9, 15.9, 15.2, 15.2, 15, 14.9, 14.7, 12, and 11.3.
3/13/07
- Remember
that Report 3B is due this week.
- Watch the announcements for details and
the posting of an old quiz.
- Note Set
4 has been posted.
- The
special instructions for Exp. 4 have been posted. Since they have been posted late,
outlines will not be required this week.
2/28/07
- Since
there was confusion about how to do the IR for benzil,
I made an addition to the Special Instructions for 3B.
2/27/07
- Notes
and special procedures for Exp. 4 will be posted sometime this week or
next. You will be able to start it
after Spring break.
- Remember
to include MS data in your journal format procedure. The e.g. of journal format were
inadvertently left out of Report Form 3A.
- Finish
3B and start 3C. Once again, it is
best to start portions where there are long periods of heating first and
then do compound characterization.
- Do
not adjust the torque wrench for the pellet presses. It is properly set.
- Remember
to turn in Report 3A and your notebooks this week.
2/23/07
- Since
some people could not get either their GC-MS or IR for Exp. 3A, the report
for it can be turned in by Friday 5:30 PM next week instead of at the end
of your lab period.
2/21/07
- I
have posted some links on the home page to free structure drawing programs
found by Dr. Tahmassebi. It is my understanding that ISIS/MDL (or
now just MDL) is similar to ChemDraw. Also, if you check the Cambridge
Software link on Chemfinder.com, you may see that a
“relatively” cheap version of ChemDraw
is available for students.
- Report
1 has been graded. The averages for
each section were 16.7 (T 9AM), 17.1 (W 3PM), and 16.9 (R 2:30PM). The range of scores was 19, 18.7, 18.5,
18.5, 18.5, 18.4, 18.4, 18.3, 18.1, 18.1, 18, 17.9, 17.8, 17.7, 17.6,
17.4, 17.4, 17.4, 17.1, 17.1, 17.78, 16.9, 16.6, 16.5, 16.5, 16.1, 15.8,
15.8, 15.6, 15.6, 15.5, 15.5, 15.5, 15.4, 15.4, 15.3, 13.9, and 13.1.
2/20/07
- Finish
Benzil (Exp. 3B and start Tetraphenylcyclopentadienone
3C as soon as you can).
- There
are long periods of heating or waiting for crystal formation in 3B and
3C. You should characterize your
products then.
- Remember
that Report 2 is due at the end of your lab period this week.
- Remember
the Report 3A is due at the end of your lab period next week.
- Turn
in your notebooks or a copy of your notebooks next week. If you turn in a copy, only include
entries that were not checked the first time.
- I have
turned back all the notebooks that were given to me on time. I wrote many things in your
notebook. Don’t go back and
rewrite anything that was corrected.
Instead, avoid that mistake for all subsequent entries. If you left a compound table blank, please
fill that in however.
2/15/07
- Since
the Tuesday and Wednesday sections lost a day, the labs for Thursday and
Friday sections will be optional.
If you feel you need to catch up, you can come in at 2:30 –
5:30 today or tomorrow. Please
contact the instructor for that day if you intend to come particularly if
you are not from that lab section.
- At
the moment, the report due dates will stay the same since they were set
far in advance. Most everyone
should be able to turn in 2 and 3A for their original due dates.
2/5/07 > 1 PM
- The
report forms for Exp. 2, 3A, and 3B have been posted. They will be due the weeks of Feb. 19,
Feb. 26, and March 12 respectively.
2/5/07
- Start
Exp. 3B this week.
- Remember
to turn in Report 1 and your notebooks this week.
- For
now, we will use the GCQ GC-MS.
Instructions for use of the instrument have been posted on the
Procedures page. I will show small
groups of students how to use the instrument when you use it for the first
time.
1/30/07
- In
Experiment 3, each reaction should have a separate notebook entry.
1/29/07
- Note
Set 3 and Special Instructions for Experiment 3B and 3C have been posted.
1/25/07
- Please
clean your hoods at the end of the lab period. If necessary, use acetone to clean up
compounds on the bench top inside your hood.
- A
student from the Fri. afternoon lab would like to trade places with
someone in the Wed. afternoon lab period.
If anyone in the Thurs. lab would like to trade, please let Dr.
Maloney know.
- Please
be careful in lab and try to focus on what you’re doing at a given
moment. We had 4 minor accidents in
lab recently that we would like to avoid.
I know it can be confusing to do multiple experiments. However, I am trying to prepare you for
the type of multitasking in a laboratory environment that is often
required.
1/23/07
- Finish
Exp. 1. Continue Exp. 2. Start Exp. 3A.
- Report
Form 1 has been posted. It will be
due at the end of your lab period in twos (week of 2/5/07).
- The
notebooks will be due for Dr. Maloney’s sections in two weeks (week
of 2/5/07).
1/17/07
- Unless
it is a minor water spill, please let me know when you have a spill or
accident. Sometimes I will let you
clean it up. Other times, it is
necessary for safety reasons that I clean it up.
1/16/07
- Start
Exp. 3A next week. The 1st
part involves mixing reagents together and allowing them to crystallize
for a week.
1/15/07
- Start
Exp. 2 and continue Exp. 1.
- Be
sure to have your outlines for Exp. 2.
1/4/07
- The
syllabus has been posted.
- Note
Sets 1 and 2 have been posted on the Course Notes page
- Procedures
for Exp. 1 and 2, and special instructions for Exp. 3 have been posted on
the Procedures/Changes page.
- All
notebooks, reports, etc. for Dr. Maloney’s sections have been placed
in the Organic Prep. Room. They can be picked up at any time the room is
open. If you were in Dr.
Ericson’s or Dr. Tahmassebi’s
sections, you will need to contact them about your scores.
- For
Dr. Maloney’s sections, you don’t have to buy new notebooks if
there is room in your old notebooks.
- Experiment
1 will be started this week. Mix the reagents, collect the precipitate by
vacuum filtration, and if possible, dissolve it in the appropriate. The spectra are also provided in the
link Spectra and Data on the homepage.
You will not need an outline for this experiment.
- Experiment
2 will be started next week. You
will need an outline for it.
- Your
CHM 254 grades listed by your 4 digit code have been posted as a link on
the CHM 254 Final Announcement link on the home page.
