Visual Design for Learning
Starts Monday, March 29 (5 weeks)

In this online workshop you will learn about the role of visual design in supporting and improving student learning and how to apply principles of visual design in the Blackboard Vista environment. To get the most out of this workshop, participants should have already used BV for a F2F or online course. Participants will be given logins to Blackboard Vista in order to access the workshop resources and activities. Registration is required.

Digital Assessment with Acrobat
Friday, March 5, from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm in Neff B 73
Workshop Instructor: Darlene Miller, CELT
Learn to use Acrobat to create PDF Portfolios, digitally assess student coursework, develop course competency surveys, and automate planning for student lessons and coursework. The newest version of Adobe Acrobat Pro (available in IPFW icons) allows you to combine PowerPoint, video, graphics, and audio comments in a single .pdf document. Demonstration, hands-on activities, and individual consultation will be included. Registration is required.

Innovations in Mobile Learning
Monday, March 15 from 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm in KT 119
Presenters: Tammy Toscos, NUR and Ray Gildner, GEOS
The presenters will demonstrate the innovative ways in which their departments are using and plan to use mobile computing technologies such as the iPod Touch, cell phones, and other mobile devices to make learning possible wherever students may be. Nursing students now download their textbooks and medical reference materials, for example, and Geology students will be able to download instructional materials developed by faculty to use on a mobile device. Editing Video to Enhance Teaching and Learning

Video is a powerful medium for teaching and learning. Video allows repeated observation of the same event and students can review the lectures and materials at later times. Learn the basics of video editing using software available on your desktop. Participants will learn how to import, edit, compile, enhance and output video for viewing on a range of video players using the appropriate file formats. Demonstration, hands-on activities, and individual consultation will be included. Registration is required.

Creating Multimedia Lectures, Tutorials and Presentations with Matchware ScreenCorder

ScreenCorder captures and records all your desktop activity in minutes - ideal for classroom teaching, online teaching, video instruction, powerful demonstrations, interactive quizzes and allows students to have access of the material at their convenience. ScreenCorder allows you to record and dub audio over the video. Demonstration, hands-on activities, and individual consultation will be included. Registration is required.

10th Anniversary Monthly Reading Circles

In “Opening Lines: Approaches to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning”, edited by Pat Hutchings, eight Carnegie Scholars tell the stories of their efforts at “opening lines” of inquiry into significant issues in the teaching and learning in their respective fields. “Opening Lines” includes a cd-rom of supplementary documents, tools and resources. We will read and discuss three of the case studies:
2/12 Case Study 1: Investigating Student Learning in a Problem-based Psychology Course by William Cerbin, Psychology, University of Wisconsin, La Crosse
3/1 Case Study 5: For Better or Worse? The marriage of the Web and the Classroom, by T. Mills Kelly, History, Texas Tech University
4/19 Case Study 8: Difficulty: The Great Educational Divide, by Mariolina Rizzi Salvatori, English, University of Pittsburgh
The facilitators encourage you to attend all three circles, but you may attend as many as you like. You must register in advance to receive a copy of the book, available for pickup in KT 234 between 9-4 daily, starting Feb. 3. Refreshments will be served.

SoTL Work Group
Thursday, March 18, from 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm in NF 140
Co-Facilitators: Michael Bendele and CASTL Committee members
Finding time to work on a SoTL project is difficult. The work group provides a way for you to schedule small blocks of time on a regular basis to work through each step in the process. The work group will use a guide created by the campus CASTL (Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) committee, incorporating short individual assignments and group activities designed to help you progress toward your goal of a finished proposal ready for submission to IRB. Attendance at all sessions is expected. Fruit, snacks, and drink will be served. The first meeting will be an overview of SoTL research process and the plan of work for the semester. Registration is required for each date.
