Getting Started with SoTL
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's web site points you to the seminal authors of the literature on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. The site also provides examples and resources for instructors interested in the scholarship.
Faculty in many universities start down the road to SoTL by creating course portfolios. Compare the benchmark portfolio of Dana Fritz with her Inquiry Portfolio of the same course. See other examples of course portfolios at The Visible Knowledge Project.
A guide is available for creating a course portfolio project based on Pat Hutchings' book, The Course Portfolio: How Faculty Can Examine Their Teaching to Advance Practice and Improve Student Learning, available in the CELT library.

Come to CELT (or browse the CELT Library) for books on classroom research, course portfolios, and other SoTL topics.
If you are interested in participating in a SoTL Learning Community, please contact CELT.
Evaluation as a paradigm for research
The Office of Academic Affairs memorandum 03-2 suggests a variety of data types and collection methods you can also use for your SoTL research.

"Build your evaluation scheme into your project at an early stage of development so that you will know ahead of time what pieces of data you will need and you can develop materials and strategies accordingly. Consider evaluating your own development process and/or your own learning too.

Protocols for Using Human Subjects in Research
IPFW faculty should apply through the Office of Research and External Support (ORES). If you use any student work, photos, recordings, or texts of any kind in a presentation or paper given outside the university, you must apply for approval to conduct research involving human subjects. Even if you are not sure that you will use the data, it's a good idea to apply anyway.
Purdue's Committee on the Use of Human Research Subjects requires investigators, key personnel, and graduate students involved in the use of human subjects to complete the CITI on-line tutorial to be certified as eligible to engage in human subject research. After taking the online training, read the full instructions for obtaining approval to conduct research involving human subjects.
Support for SoTL projects
CELT Research Fellowship
The Research Fellow program helps faculty begin and sustain research projects. To apply for a fellowship you must submit a written proposal to CELT. A Fellowship lasts for one calendar year and is not renewable.
The Mack Center
The Mack Center, located at IUPUI, exists to stimulate inquiry in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, to recognize, honor, and increase the influence of that scholarly inquiry, and to foster change with the underlying goal of promoting excellence in education at Indiana University, in the United States, and internationally. The Mack Fellows' work is at the very core of the mission of Indiana University 's Mack Center for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Each year a group of fellows is selected from the full-time faculty of IU campuses to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).
Carnegie Scholars Program
The Carnegie Scholars Program has been working with individual faculty from a wide variety of disciplines and institutions since 1998. During that time there have been five CASTL cohorts, in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2003 (also see the list of 2005-2006 Carnegie Scholars). Each of these 140 Carnegie Scholars participated in a one-year residency at The Carnegie Foundation, during which they produced individual scholarship of teaching and learning projects, represented below in a variety of forms and formats including project summaries, snapshots, and portfolios.
Publishing your Research
Selected Library Resources on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning includes a listing of SoTL journals by subject area.
The Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (JoSOTL)
Originally published by IUSB, this journal was among the first publications of its type in 2001. The Journal provides a publication outlet for research in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and an on-line forum for engagement with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
