Getting Started with SoTL

Become a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Fellow

The goal of the SoTL Fellow is to help colleagues move from scholarly teaching to the scholarship of teaching and learning. If you have experience in researching teaching and learning and believe in its potential to enhance student learning, consider sharing your expertise with colleagues as they formulate questions, do literature reviews, design their evaluation strategies, and analyze data. For more details on this paid Fellowship, funded by RESP, see the program description and complete an application. (Please note that the CELT SoTL Fellow is different from the RESP IRB Mentoring Program.)

Yvonne Zubovic is the 2010-11 SoTL Fellow. She can be contacted at zubovic@ipfw.edu or 481-6307.

IPFW's Committee for the Advancing Scholarly Teaching and Learning Excellence  (CASTLE)

In October 2008 the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) made IPFW an affiliate institution, joining 47 campuses from across the United States and Canada. The Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs designated a five-member CASTL steering committee composed of faculty and staff to be responsible for planning activities and projects such as professional conferences, SoTL faculty learning communities, fellowships, grants, awards and other activities that support scholarly teaching and research on teaching and learning. The office of the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and CELT provide resources for the work of the committee. In 2011 the committee was renamed Committee for the Advancing Scholarly Teaching and Learning Excellence (CASTLE).

The committee members are:

Gail Rathbun, CELT Director and Committee Chair 481-6504
Michael Bendele, Psychology 481-6436
Ludwika Goodson, CELT 481-0692
Denise Jordan, Nursing 481-0250
Yvonne Zubovic, Mathematical Sciences 481-6037

Come to CELT (or browse the CELT library) for books on classroom research, course portfolios, and other SoTL topics.

Creating a Course Portfolio

Faculty in many universities start down the road to SoTL by creating course portfolios. Compare the benchmark portfolio of Dana Fritz with her Inquiry Portfolio of the same course. See other examples of course portfolios at the Visible Knowledge Project at Georgetown University.

A guide is available for creating a course portfolio project based on Pat Hutchings' book, The Course Portfolio: How Faculty Can Examine Their Teaching to Advance Practice and Improve Student Learning, available in the CELT library.

Create an online course portfolio at MERLOT.org where you can also receive peer reviews of your work. This Power Point presentation, based on Pat Hutchings' Course Portfolio book cited above, provides you with links to examples and instructions.

Protocols for Using Human Subjects in Research

IPFW faculty should apply through the Office of Research, Engagement, and Sponsored Programs (RESP). If you use any student work, photos, recordings, or texts of any kind in a presentation or paper given outside the university, you must apply for approval to conduct research involving human subjects. Even if you are not sure that you will use the data, it's a good idea to apply anyway.

Purdue's Committee on the Use of Human Research Subjects requires investigators, key personnel, and graduate students involved in the use of human subjects to complete the CITI on-line tutorial to be certified as eligible to engage in human subject research. After taking the online training, read the full instructions for obtaining approval to conduct research involving human subjects.

Need help with your IRB protocol application? Are you uncertain as to how to approach requested revisions? If so, the IPFW IRB Mentoring program is now in place to help. IRB Mentoring provides assistance to those who need or want help in preparing an IRB protocol application. Please do not contact the mentors directly. If you wish to utilize the service of one of the mentors, please contact Pat Farrell at 481.6164 or email Farrell@ipfw.edu.

Support for SoTL projects

The Mack Center, located at IUPUI, exists to stimulate inquiry in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, to recognize, honor, and increase the influence of that scholarly inquiry, and to foster change with the underlying goal of promoting excellence in education at Indiana University, in the United States, and internationally. The Mack Fellows' work is at the very core of the mission of Indiana University 's Mack Center for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Each year a group of fellows is selected from the full-time faculty of IU campuses to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).

If you are giving a poster session at a conference, here are templates you can use, one in a vertical orientation 30"X40" and one in a horizontal orientation 42"X50". Instructions for using the templates, suggestions for effective layouts, and pricing information are provided in this two page handout, prepared by Gail Rathbun, CELT Director.
