Schedule an appointment to see a career counselor. But in the meantime, here is a list of things you can start thinking about.
…as a freshman
- Visit Career Services in KT 109 and meet the staff
- Identify your interests, skills, and values.
- Join the Undelcared Student listserv and receive valuable advising and career information, including career events on campus.
- Take a variety of General Education classes to see what’s “out there”.
- Develop short and long-range academic and career goals.
- Read these tips for major exploration
- Explore a variety of majors with Career Services and faculty.
- Explore interesting careers online and with Career Services.
- Attend academic workshops (study skills, test taking skills, learning styles, etc.) presented by Career Services.
- Identify campus organizations, activities, and projects you’d like to be involved in.
…as a sophomore
- Choose a major consistent with your self-assessment and exploration.
- Continue career exploration related to your area of study and interests.
- Begin to develop your resume and meet with a career counselor for a resume critique.
- Get involved in career-related activities such as internships, co-ops, student organizations, volunteer experiences, and part-time or summer employment.
- Discuss your career and educational plans with counselors, academic advisors, and employers.
- Register for JobZone, our resume database for internships and full-time degreed positions.
- Build relationships with faculty and instructors.
- Take Career Planning (Educ X210) to learn about career and major choices, and how to conduct a job/internship search.
…as a junior
- Identify your options after graduation. Graduate school? Employment?
- Explore your career interests in depth.
- Update your resume.
- Attend informational seminars, career fairs, and grad school activities.
- Establish contacts in the business or professional world or with grad schools.
- Obtain career-related experience such as internships, co-ops, or volunteer positions.
- Take Career Planning (Educ X210) to learn about career and major choices, and how to conduct a job/internship search.
- Register for JobZone.
- Take graduate or professional school exams.
…as a senior
- Begin the job search process 6-8 months prior to graduation.
- Identify and utilize the skills and abilities you have developed throughout college.
- Finalize your resume.
- Register for JobZone.
- Schedule a mock interview with Career Services.
- Meet with a career counselor regarding the job search, interviewing, and/or graduate school.
- Participate in campus interviews and attend career fairs.
- Obtain firsthand occupational and industry-related information from personal and professional contacts.
