Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)

In past years, the Department of Accounting and Finance at Indiana University - Purdue University at Fort Wayne has offered free tax return assistance and free e-filing as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA).  The VITA program is an optional service learning opportunity for any student who successfully completes a certification program prepared by the Internal Revenue Service and who has successfully completed or is currently enrolled in the Department of Accounting and Finance individual income tax course.  Our student volunteers prepare federal and state income tax returns using professional tax software supplied by the Internal Revenue Service.  A recent change to the program allows students to attend VITA sites throughout Fort Wayne.

The free service is available to low to moderate income taxpayers who need help with their Internal Revenue Service 1040EZ, 1040A, or 1040 forms.  The VITA program targets the senior population, the disabled, the non-English speaking, or the taxpayer who cannot afford professional tax preparation.
