Energizing the Writing Classroom:
Boosting Student Achievement
through Teacher Engagement
The
theme of the conference is to help teachers regain their voices and passion
for teaching and therefore boost student achievement through a renewed excitement
for writing. Keynote speaker Barry Lane will focus on
incorporating voice and passion in nonfiction and other writing and address
prompted writing tests. He will demonstrate practical strategies for all
grade and subject levels and enthusiastically engage the audience with his
unique approach to the teaching of writing.
Concurrent sessions from many of Appleseed's
Teacher Consultants will run both before and after lunch featuring
grade-level presentations of best practices for writing and the teaching of
writing. The program will feature strands in primary/elementary, junior
high/middle school, high school and college/university. Presentations will
connect theory to classroom practice and community, including interaction
and model collaboration among different subject and grade levels.
This year, a Friday night reception has been added to the agenda. Barry Lane will join us as
we read, write and recite from our own work in a writer's marathon/open mic. The event begins at 6:00
p.m. in the Auer Hall lobby of IPFW's Rhinehart Music Center, where
appetizers and a cash bar will be available. Participants will then engage
in a writing prompt and later share their work in
an open mic/reading session. A reduced fee is
available for those who attend both
Friday night's reception and Saturday's conference. Click here for a Flyer to share with
other educators.
