Degrees and Certificates

Master of Arts in Speech and Language Pathology (TARGET DATE: 2010)

The master’s degree in speech-language pathology at IPFW is under development.  Currently, only the undergraduate degree with the major in speech and hearing therapy is offered.  The following courses are offered at IPFW as dual-level courses.  Most students who take these courses use them as electives in their undergraduate course of study to prepare them for graduate work in speech-language pathology or audiology.

Dual Level, Undergraduate-Graduate

AUS 516: Foundations of Assessment in Communication Disorders, Cr. 3.
P: 115, 302, 304, 306, and 309. An introduction to general principles of evaluation and assessment of communication disorders and to specific assessment tests.
 
AUS 521: Phonetic and Phonological Disorders in Children, Cr. 2.
P: 306 and 309. A detailed study of phonetic and phonological aspects of speech-sound disorders in children. Recent research findings dealing with normal and disordered development are reviewed. Advanced procedures for diagnosis and intervention are discussed.
 
AUS 549: Clinical Practice in Speech Language Pathology I, Class 1, Lab. 1–8, Cr. 1–8.
P: 420, 449, or equivalents, with a minimum grade of B in each course and/or consent of advisor. May be repeated for credit. The second in a series of practicum courses designed to provide instruction and practical experience in fundamental diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to speech and language disorders.
 
AUS 550: Aural Rehabilitation for Adults, Cr. 3.
P: 460 or consent of instructor. Theoretical and clinical implications associated with the hearing loss in adults and geriatric adults. Discussion centers on a family-centered team approach, built upon the effective use of amplification and other assistive devices.
 
AUS 551: Aural Rehabilitation for Children, Cr. 3.
P: 460 or equivalent or consent of instructor. An overview of the effects of hearing impairment on language, speech, academic, and psychosocial development. Topics also include communication modalities, and principles and current practices for assessment and intervention.
 
AUS 590: Directed Study of Special Problems, Cr. 1–6. (V.T.)
P: Consent of instructor. May be repeated for credit.
