Marian Donewald Library
The Donewald Library in Neff Hall 274 provides AUS students, faculty, and interested professionals with convenient access to up-to-date publications in the fields of speech pathology and audiology. Supported by a gift from Marian Donewald, the library trust aims to maintain a large collection of study materials including books, journals, and videotapes, while also insuring the continued viability of the trust. AUS students and faculty are encouraged to make suggestions for new additions to the library's holdings.
Many of the library's books, journals and other materials may be checked out overnight or for longer periods. Reference books, bound journals, and items held on reserve for current courses do not circulate. Details of library policies can be found in the Student Handbook. [more]
Students should keep in mind that many additional relevant resources are available In IPFW's main library. The Helmke Library AUS liaison librarian is available to assist in locating those materials.
Speech Sciences Lab
The speech sciences lab is located in the Donewald Library. The laboratory includes four recently acquired computer workstations with digital audio I/O capability along with signal processing software for speech analysis. The facility is designed for use in teaching acoustic phonetics and for conducting speech research.
A suite of rooms in Neff Hall 239 is available for use in speech and hearing clinical practicum. The rooms include facilities for conducting evaluations and therapies for clinic clients, equipment for video-taping therapy sessions for teaching and research activities, a sound suite for conducting hearing testing, a reception room with a children's play area, and a clinic computer lab for student study and report writing. The clinic facility is used intensively for conducting hearing testing and speech-language therapy for clients from the IPFW and Fort Wayne communities.

- Preserve the collection for future users
- Develop appropriate skills and motivation of staff
- Ensure its financial viability
- Develop, review, and update policies and procedures annually
- Refer students to the Helmke Library AUS liaison librarian for identification, location, retrieval and dissemination of information not available in the AUS Donewald library.
Materials Selection
The AUS faculty as a whole, or a sub-committee thereof, will accept suggestions and make final recommendations on the purchase of all new materials and any needed replacement items.
Circulation and Check-Out
Borrowing privileges are available to AUS faculty and students and are also extended to AUS alumni and related professionals in area community upon request, provided that the materials are not needed by AUS students or faculty. Items checked out by students who are neither students nor faculty will be recalled when an item is placed on hold by either a student or faculty member.
- Each person, regardless of status, who requests borrowing privileges, must fill out the borrower’s card in the back of the material. Both the phone number and address should be included if the student is not an IPFW student.
- Students will be responsible for all materials charged to their card.
- The lending period will be two weeks, except for faculty who may check out items on a semester basis.
- There will be no recalls during the first checkout period, unless a current student or faculty member requests an item held by an alumni or audiology professional.
- One renewal is allowed for all students if the item does not have a hold on it for another student.
- Phone renewals are not accepted.
- There no limit on the number of items borrowed, unless complications arise.
- Bound periodicals/journals may not be checked out. Unbound journals may circulate for the same period as other items, which can be checked out. Current journals to be bound are held by the department secretary.
- Reference works may not be checked out.
- Reserve materials will have a two-hour or overnight borrowing limit. These are subject to immediate recall.
Overdue Materials
All students who did not return materials by the due date or by the end of the semester will be contacted. A second written notice sent by mail will be issued two weeks after the student has been notified and failed to return the materials.
Students who do not respond to overdue notices within thirty days of the original due date will be sent a replacement bill.
The replacement fee will be the cost of the item, if known, OR a standard fee of $40.00 for each missing book and $50.00 for each videotape.
Damaged Materials
Students are responsible for damaged materials and vandalism not due to normal wear and aging of materials.
The cost for repairing or replacing damaged materials will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
Confidentiality of Records
It is the policy of the Donewald Library not to release information that would reveal the identity of a library student who checked out our used certain materials or requested information service. Information concerning the account or circulation records of a student will be released to that student only.
Other requests for the release of confidential student records will be honored if submitted in writing and accompanied by an order from the court and/or be in compliance with IPFW policy for the release of student information. These guidelines are in accordance with the Policy on Confidentiality of Records adopted by the American Library Association (ALA).
All library employees are trained to honor the confidentiality of student borrowing records. The Audiology and Speech Sciences department chair resolves all issues related to access of student records.
Student Behavior
It is the policy of the Donewald Library to provide an environment that is conducive to promoting scholarship and research. The following behavior will not be allowed in the library:
- Any behavior that endangers the safety or health of others
- Violation of any local, state or federal law while in the library
- Vandalism or deliberate destruction of library materials or property
- Theft of library materials or the personal property of others
- Use of threatening and/or abusive language
- Excessively loud discussion or laughing that disturbs other students
- Smoking, eating, or drinking
- Grossly inappropriate dress
Note: The Donewald (AUS) Library is on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne and all guidelines for campus behavior as set out in the IPFW Student Handbook apply to the library. If disruptive and/or threatening behavior occurs and is not immediately corrected and brought under control, appropriate authorities and the campus police will be contacted as outlined in the IPFW Student Handbook.
In most cases, students who are behaving inappropriately in the library will be given one warning by library staff. Students who refuse to behave appropriately after one warning will be asked to leave the library.
In cases in which a student poses a clear danger to self or others, deliberately violates the law, or refuses to leave the library after being asked to leave by the library staff, the campus police will be contacted immediately to handle the situation.
Unattended Children
Children who are unattended or appear to be in the facilities without adult supervision can be a cause of concern to the library. Issues of safety, liability, and responsibility motivate the library to address this potentially serious problem. It is the policy of the library to require that students not leave children unattended in the library.
The following procedure will be used if it is determined that a child is lost or left unattended for more than five minutes.
- If possible, a staff person will attempt to locate the child’s parent/guardian in the library.
- A staff person will notify campus police that there is a lost or unattended child in the building.
- The staff person will remain with the child until the parent is located or police have matters in their control.
- Under no circumstances shall a staff member take a child out of the building.
Guidelines for Computer Users
The Donewald Library adopts and adheres to all computer use guidelines as stated in the IPFW Student Handbook.
Gifts and Memorials

The chairperson will send an appropriate letter of appreciation to the donor recognizing the specific gift(s).
If the gift item is to be shelved for student use, a standard Donewald Library gift sticker will be affixed to the front cover, and a date slip with the pocket and card will be affixed as usual.
The items will be entered in the Donewald Library catalog/database.
Memorials may be deemed to be an appropriate recognition. Prior to any action, interested parties should contact the AUS chairperson for discussion and approval.
