IPFW head men’s volleyball coach Arnie Ball reached a coaching
milestone on Saturday night at the Hilliard Gates Sports
Center. Ball, in his 25th year with the Mastodons, won his
400th career match, as IPFW beat the University of Findlay,
3-1 in a conference match.
The Mastodons were winners by the scores of 30-19, 30-24, 22-30,
and 30-21.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak and improved IPFW’s
record to 2-3 (1-1, MIVA).
The Mastodons were led by junior middle hitter Serdar
Sikca (Istanbul, Turkey) with 16 kills. The “Big Turk” recorded a hitting
percentage of .842 in the match, which fell just a few points
shy of the school’s all-time record held by assistant coach Ryan
Perrotte. Perrotte’s mark of .850 came against Ohio State in
1999.
2004 First-Team All-American Matt
Zbyszewski (Toronto, Ontario,
Canada) had 15 kills, three aces, a block solo, and four block
assists for a team-high 21 points.
Freshman Josh
Stewart (St. Mary’s, Ontario, Canada) recorded
seven block assists as IPFW out-blocked the Oilers 10-7 in the
match.
Findlay (5-3, 0-2, MIVA) was led by C.J. Macias with a match-high
26 kills.
Arnie Ball, who has taken IPFW to four Final Four’s in his career,
is currently 4th on the NCAA’s All-Time Wins List.
IPFW returns to action on Wednesday, February 2nd, traveling
to Findlay, Ohio, to take on the same Oilers. Match time is 7pm.
