Powell’s 39 Kills lead Mason past IPFW

Fort Wayne, IN- - George Mason junior outside hitter Shaun Powell’s career night powered the Patriots past IPFW, 3-2 on Friday night at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.

Mason won by the scores of 30-23, 28-30, 26-30, 34-32, and 15-7.

IPFW had two match points in the fourth game, but couldn’t convert. George Mason used the momentum of the fourth game win to steamroll IPFW in the fifth on .333 hitting.

The loss negated a career night for IPFW junior middle hitter Serdar Sikca, who recorded 19 kills of his own. The Mastodons were led by senior outside hitter Matt Zbyszewski with 20 kills and 12 digs.

Powell registered 39 kills, on .441 hitting, to go along with six digs.

The Patriots out-hit IPFW .313 to .185 in the match.

The Mastodons return to action on Saturday night (1/22,) hosting Penn State University, at 7pm.
